The ETSU men captured the regular season championship after a 4-0 win over Furman on Saturday. The Bucs will open the tournament Friday against the eight-seeded Citadel Bulldogs. The winner of that match will advance to face either No. 4 Samford or No. 5 UNCG. The Bulldogs and Spartans square off at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Mercer earned the No. 3 seed and will take on Wofford Friday at 1:00 p.m. The final match of the day will pit No. 2 Furman against No. 7 Chattanooga at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday’s semifinal matchups will begin at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday’s title match is also set for 2:00 p.m.
Furman leads all current Southern Conference programs with 14 tournament titles. Chattanooga has won the league’s tournament 12 times, while ETSU has won seven championships. Samford captured the conference tournament in 2011 and 2013, while UNCG won in 2010.
The Samford Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed on the women's side after topping Chattanooga Saturday in a matchup of two teams who were undefeated in league play. The Bulldogs moved to 7-0 in SoCon play to earn the regular season title, while the Mocs earned the No. 2 seed. Samford will open the tournament Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. against No. 8 Mercer. The second match in the morning session pits No. 4 Furman against No. 5 UNCG. The Paladins and Spartans played a tightly-contested match last Saturday afternoon with Furman claiming a 4-3 decision.
The afternoon session begins at 1:00 p.m. Friday with No. 3 ETSU taking on No. 6 Wofford. The final quarterfinal has the Mocs taking on No. 7 Western Carolina.
Saturday’s semifinal matchups will begin at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday’s championship match is also set for 10:00 a.m.
Furman and Chattanooga are the only current SoCon members to have won the conference tournament. The Mocs won the first three tournaments (1984-86) and have five tournament championships to their credit. Furman leads all programs with 16 Southern Conference Tournament championships. The Paladins last won the league’s tourney in 2008.
