Furman Tops Wofford Monday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a match that spanned the course of five days, the Wofford men’s tennis team dropped a tough, 4-2 decision to the Furman Paladins on Monday night at the Westside Club.

Senior Rob Galloway highlighted the Terriers’ performance with wins in both doubles and singles. After taking a victory in doubles, Galloway forged a massive comeback for the team’s second point. After trailing 5-1 in the third set, the senior topped Adam Steryous, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to earn the win at No. 1.

With the singles victory, Galloway has 15 singles wins this season, becoming just the 17th Terrier to ever do so.

With the loss, the Terriers sit at 9-10 on the season with a 3-4 record in the conference. The Terriers are one of three teams with a 3-4 conference record, and have secured the sixth seed in the Southern Conference tournament. Wofford will face the third seeded Mercer Bears on Friday in the first round of the tournament. Last time the two sides met, Mercer took a narrow, 4-3, win.

The Paladins edged Wofford in the initial doubles point. Beginning on Thursday afternoon, senior duo Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron earned a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, over Matt Browne and Ben Horst. The Paladins bounced back at No. 2, as sophomore tandem Haris Poric and Andrew Graham fell to Steryous and Cameron Green, 8-1. Play was then halted by scattered showers, preventing any action throughout the weekend. When the match resumed on Monday evening, juniors David Sklar and Parks Thompson looked to rally from a three-game deficit, but dropped the point, 8-5, to Jacob Behal and Juan Sheppard.

Poric evened the score for the Terriers. The first to finish, Poric took a straight set victory at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2 over Browne before Galloway’s comeback win.

Furman took the next two sets. Heffron battled three sets at No. 3, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, before falling to Green. Freshman Parks Schoen took a straight-sets loss, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. The clinching match was decided at the No. 6 spot, as Thompson faced stiff competition in the Paladins’ Sheppard, who won the match 6-2, 6-2. David Sklar and Jacob Behal nearly completed their second set when play was stopped.
