ETSU Tops UNCG Wednesday

BRISTOL, Tenn. - For the seventh time in nine matches, the ETSU women's tennis team notched a win, defeating UNC Greensboro, 6-1, at the Bristol Racquet & Fitness Club in the Bucs' regular-season finale.

Prior to the match, ETSU recognized the contributions of its lone outgoing senior, Jessica Brumit, as well as graduate assistant Paola Stephen and athletic trainer Chelsea Puckett.

Playing in the final home match of her career, Brumit earned a pair of wins—an appropriate closure to the regular season for one of the program's all-time winningest players.

At No. 2 Doubles, Brumit paired with Regina Nychytailova for an 8-6 win, extending the duo's win streak to five matches. Meanwhile, Brumit was the first player to finish in singles play, cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 5 position.

During her four-year career at ETSU, Brumit has excelled on and off the court, amassing an impressive overall record of 105-39, including a 41-6 mark in conference play. In 2012 and 2014, she earned All-Atlantic Sun Second Team honors. Off the court, she has maintained a stellar 3.98 grade point average, and was named Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year last season.

Complimenting Brumit and Nychytailova's doubles victory were the Buccaneers' (13-5, 5-2 SoCon) other two doubles teams, which each earned wins in tiebreakers, allowing ETSU to carry a 1-0 match advantage into singles play.

Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi outlasted the Spartans' (8-10, 2-3 SoCon) Kayla Gammie and Corinne Blythe, 8-7 (9-7), to win at the top doubles spot, while Melissa Esguerra and Ioanna Markesini also won in a tiebreaker, defeating Masey DeMoss and Soumeya Anane, 8-7 (7-3), at No. 3.

Together, Esguerra and Markesini have won a team-best six consecutive doubles matches.

Wednesday's match marked the eighth-consecutive outing in which the Bucs have captured the doubles point.

In singles play, ETSU earned wins at five of the six spots, with four of those victories coming in straight sets.

Choo tallied her third-consecutive singles win, besting Gammie, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 1.

Gerbasi clinched the match for the the Bucs, recording a 6-4, 6-4 win over Amy Ellis at the No. 3 position.

Fresman Jayde Viccars also won in straight sets by defeating Blaine Boaz, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.

At No. 2 Singles, Nychytailova came from behind to earn a hard-fought, three-set victory versus Anane, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
