SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Brandon Hazouri has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while teammate Javion Lee was selected as the Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. Western Carolina’s Genevieve Emrick has been named the Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while teammate Hailey Cook earned Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Brandon Hazouri won the 800-meter race at the Border Clash with a SoCon-best time of 1:48.12. The time betters the school record already set by the junior runner.
Javion Lee finished runner-up in the triple jump at the Border Clash with a conference-leading jump of 50-2 feet. The mark is a new school record and leads the SoCon by nearly nine inches.
Emrick set a meet record in the 400 meters at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic with a SoCon-best time of 54.24. The senior runner also finished second in the 200 meters with a personal-best of 24.36, which also leads the SoCon this season. Emrick was a part of the 4 x 100 team that set a meet record and recorded a SoCon-leading time of 45.67 as well.
Cook recorded personal bests on three different throws at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic last weekend. The sophomore won the shot put with a school-record distance of 49-2.25 feet. The native of Hendersonville, N.C. also took the discus with a personal-best throw of 147 feet while finishing second in the hammer throw with a toss of 152-9.
