SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Sarah Beth Roberts and Western Carolina’s Jordan Garrett have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Roberts batted .562 (9-for-16) with two home runs, three doubles, five runs and six RBIs in four games for Chattanooga last week. The Mocs went 3-1 on the week as the senior third basemen recorded three multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games with an extra-base hit in all four games.
Roberts shined on the weekend, going 8-for-11 (.727) at the plate with two doubles, two homers, five runs and four RBIs, as the Mocs took two of three at Furman. She put together back-to-back three-hit performances in Saturday’s doubleheader with a double and at least one run scored in each. She saved her best for last, though, going 2-for-4 with two homers, two runs and three RBIs to lead UTC on Sunday.
The native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn. earns her first weekly award of the season.
Garrett tossed 16.0 innings last week, compiling a 1.31 ERA and a 3-0 record to earn her second straight Pitcher of the Week honor. The senior pitcher allowed just three runs on 13 hits while issuing five walks against seven strikeouts in three starts for the Catamounts, as they swept Samford last weekend.
Garrett pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one run on six hits with no walks against five strikeouts to earn the victory in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Bulldogs. She followed it up with 4.0 scoreless innings in game two, in which she allowed just three hits with one walk and one strikeout to earn the victory. Garrett then closed out the weekend with 6.0 innings pitched, four hits, two runs and one strikeout in Western Carolina’s 3-2 victory on Sunday.
The native of Henderson, N.C. leads the SoCon with a 2.04 ERA and now has 13 wins on the season, one of six SoCon pitchers with double-digit victories. She claims the weekly award for the third time this season and the fourth time in her career.
