Chattanooga 7, Dalton State 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team swept the Dalton State Roadrunners today, 7-0 at the UTC Tennis Courts. The Mocs broke their four-match losing streak in their final home contest of the season.

“It couldn’t have turned out any better,” stated head coach Carlos Garcia, “But obviously I think coach [Zach] Rogers and the Dalton State Roadrunners are a fantastic program.”

Chattanooga started off the day quickly in the doubles play as the Mocs sweep all three doubles matches to secure the 1-0 lead.

Pavels Grigorjevs and Nic Wilson were first off the court with their 8-2 win over Hadyn Fava and Sebastian Dartnell at No. 2. Following them were Lucas Plesky and John Peacey at No. 1 and Luke Saunders and Nick Wingord at No. 3 winning their matches by a score of 8-5 and 8-6, respectively.

The Mocs continued to dominate the Roadrunners in singles play as Junior Nick Wingord posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hadyn Fava at No. 4. Senior Gino Delavalle followed him with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lucas de Souza at No. 6. Today was Delavalle’s final home match as a Chattanooga Moc and he came out on top putting the Mocs up 3-0 in the match.

The deciding match that secured the overall victory for Chattanooga was at No. 2 where sophomore Lucas Plesky posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Adam Hornby. The Mocs continued on as junior Luke Saunders battled in a third set to pull out the 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(5) victory over Joe Bray at No. 3.

Sophomore Nic Wilson posted a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory over Sebastian Dartnell at No. 4. The most exciting match of the day came when Senior Pavels Grigorjevs came back from losing his first set to winning the match in a super tie-breaker by a score of 5-7. 7-5, 1-0(9) to give Chattanooga the 7-0 shutout over Dalton State.

“It’s just a fitting way to finish with the No. 1 match, 11-9 in the super tie-breaker for a young man who hasn’t had the season that he wanted,” Garcia said about Grigorjevs. “But I think it is the start of something and it couldn’t have come at a better time.”
