Wofford 6, Western Carolina 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women’s tennis team earned an impressive, 6-1 victory over the Catamounts of Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
Doubles opened with all three Terrier duos earning wins. At the No. 1 spot, Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid topped Megan McLinden and Shannon Bettiol, 8-1. At No. 3, Taylor Carlson and Samantha Russell managed to blank Elizabeth Ansari and Erin Maguire, 8-0. After spots No. 1 and No. 3 clinched the point, Mareli Sanchez and Catherine Matrin won the tiebreaker to take the win, 6-5.
In singles play, Samantha Russell notched the first win of the day. The freshman trailed 1-0 when Elizabeth Ansari retired due to a wrist injury.
The Terriers took the points to clinch in quick succession. Kalli Karas took the No. 3 hole, 6-2, 6-2, before Catherine Martin clinched the point in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
At No. 2, Audrey Coventry earned a fitting win, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The senior was honored earlier in the day, with a pre-match, senior day ceremony. Reid rounded out the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Samford 7, UNCG 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team fell to conference leader Samford, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans drop to 8-9 on the season and are 2-2 in conference play. Samford improves to 11-8 with a perfect 5-0 record in SoCon action.
In doubles, the Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Stephanie N’tcha and Carita Moolman defeated senior Kayla Gammie and freshman Corinne Blythe, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Yasmeen Ebada and Jessica Northcutt clinched the doubles point with a 8-4 win against senior Stephanie Falcon and freshman Blaine Boaz.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Masey DeMoss and junior Soumeya Anane lost to AnnMarie Lyon and Savannah Wood, 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Iva Parapunova defeated Blythe in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Wood gave Samford a 3-0 lead after a 6-1, 6-2 win against junior Jamie Grinberg at No. 6 singles.
N’tcha clinched the victory for the Bulldogs after defeating Gammie, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Northcutt took down Anane, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Ebada won in straight sets against Falcon, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. In the final match, Moolman defeated junior Amy Ellis, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
