Wofford 4, Chattanooga 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the match on the line, junior David Sklar stepped up for the Terriers to clinch a tight, 4-3, win for Wofford over the Mocs of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the team’s Southern Conference debut.
 
After doubles and five singles matches, the game down to a decisive match at the No. 6 spot.  Sklar faced tough opposition in Chattanooga junior John Peacy. The two went at it for three sets, where Sklar rebounded after a first-set loss to earn a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 tiebreak win. The junior took the tiebreak 7-1 to secure the match for Wofford.
 
The match was tight through, with doubles being no exception. All three matches were determined by a total of seven games, as the Terriers took spots No. 1 and No .3 to earn the doubles point. The lineup saw some slight shifts as seniors Walker Heffron and Galloway paired up at No. 1, defeating Chattanooga’s Pavels Grigorjevs and Peacy, 8-3. The five-game match was the largest margin of doubles victory, as the remaining matches were decided 8-7. Trevor Gotkowski and Poric were topped at No. 2 by Lucas Plesky and Nic Wilson, while Parks Thomspon and Sklar grabbed a win over Luke Saunders and Nick Wingord at No. 3.
 
Singles was heated as well. Galloway helped the Terriers jump out to a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Grigorjevs. Poric added another valuable win at No. 2 over Wingord, 7-5, 6-2, to make the gap 3-0.
 
Freshman Parks Schoen (No. 4; 6-3, 6-2), Thompson (No. 5; 7-5, 6-3) and Heffron (No. 3; 7-6, 6-2) all battled but fell short in singles before Sklar’s rally to take the match.
 


Georgia Southern 4, UNCG 3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team took the doubles point but Georgia Southern came away with a close 4-3 victory Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

The Spartans sit at 4-4 on the season with back-to-back 4-3 losses on the weekend. Georgia Southern improves 5-6 with the win.

 In doubles, UNCG jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. The Eagles duo of Joan Carles Alcala and Christian Kerrigan took down freshman James Gray and Logan Walker, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. 

Freshman Connor Thompson and senior Randy Phillips defeated Jose Landin and Kyle Hoffman, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.

In the deciding doubles match, redshirt sophomore William Albright and sophomore Warren Bryan outlasted Albert Codina Sala and Ristomatti Lanne, 8-7 (8-6) in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Thompson pushed UNCG’s lead to 2-0 after a straight sets win against Landin, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Georgia Southern would tie the match with two straight wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Alcala defeated Albright, 6-2, 6-1 and Nico de Groof won in straight sets against Walker, 6-2, 6-2. 

Phillips gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead after winning in straight sets against Lanne, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Sala tied the match for the Eagles at 3-3 after defeating junior Daniel Mack, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 2 singles.

In the final match, senior Cameron Smith forced a third set tiebreaker but Hoffman was able to win the breaker 7-4 to clinch the match at No. 3 singles. Hoffman earned the win with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) match in a close final set tiebreaker.
