JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite digging itself and early hole, the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team wouldn't give up the fight before falling to 13th-ranked Marquette at D.B. Milne Field on Friday.
The Dolphins fell behind early as the Golden Eagles used a ball-hawking offense to get out to a 3-0 first period lead.
JU got rolling with 12:43 to play in the half when junior Austin Collins scored on an unassisted goal and a bit more than two minutes later the Dolphins were within one when Fernando Milanes scored on an assist from Rob Moore.
The teams traded scores and senior Conor Igoe got the Dolphins back within one at 4-3 with an assist from Dakota Rohlin.
After a pair of Marquette goals, JU got back to within 6-5 at the half as junior Tom Moore scored and that was followed by an electrifying goal by Rob Moore at the buzzer.
The Dolphins scored three times in the third, two by Tom Moore (who also had three assists) and one by Rohlin to tie at 8 heading into the final period.
The Golden Eagles (6-0) started the final quarter with three goals in the first 6:05, but JU fought back again as Quint Miller and Rohlin each found the net to get to within one at 12-11 with 3:48 to play.
Marquette's Ryan McNamara ended the scoring at the 3:06 mark.
Van Arsdale said heading into the game he was concerned about quick turnaround from Tuesday's game against Michigan.
The Dolphins play host to Robert Morris Wednesday at 1 p.m.
