Postgame Quotes: Mercer vs. Wofford

Mercer Bears

Coach Susie Gardner

Opening statement
“Our focal point was our defense, and I feel out of the gates, we did a really good job of taking them out of what they were trying to do. We got some steals and open layups. We knew Wofford would make a run; they’ve been down in their most recent game, to Western, and they were down 17 and came back. I was pleased with our effort. I was pleased that everyone contributed for us tonight. We did a great job on the rebounding end.”

On second half
“I felt we were fouling too much the entire game, especially in the first half. We kept the same intensity we had defensively and we hit more shots. The stat that jumps out the most is our rebounding. I thought our rebounding was the difference.”

Senior Alicia Williams

On aggressive play
“It’s a mentality for every game. I was fortunate this game that my shot was on and I was glad to contribute to the team.”

Freshman Kahlia Lawrence

On playing in first postseason game
“Obviously, your first time in something this big there, will be a little bit of nerves. I think coach prepared us pretty well and we came into the game with a positive mindset, like Alicia said. I was trying to do what I could do best and that’s get points.”

Wofford Terriers

Coach Edgar I. Farmer Jr.

On Mercer opening up a lead
“We knew we were going to have to scratch and claw to get back in the game. Mercer hit some tough shots when we were trying to make a run. It just seemed like it was an uphill battle.”

On his two seniors
“Lauren Kirby, who has been injured with an ACL, was our starting center, and Michelle Merritt. We’re losing two phenomenal young women who exemplify class both on and off the court and represent the ideals of Wofford College.”
