Middle Tennessee State 5, Chattanooga 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team lost a tough battle today against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. This was just the Mocs second loss of the season.
Chattanooga started off strong, securing the doubles point by winning the first two doubles matches at one and two, respectively.
Middle Tennessee came storming back when Brittany Huxley tied the match with her (6-0, 6-0) win over senior Claire Mulyadi at No. 5. The Blue Raiders took an early lead with Tiffany William’s (6-1, 6-3) victory over junior Kayla Jones at No. 1.
Senior Kaylene Chadwell fought hard to secure a (1-6, 6-3, 6-1) win over Jesse Grace at No. 3 to tie up the match at 2-2. Middle Tennessee quickly regained the lead when Giulia Squadrin defeated freshman Samantha Caswell with a (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) win at No. 4 to put the Blue Raiders ahead 3-2.
Middle Tennessee sealed the win today when Darya Shulzhanok overcame junior Kelsey Coots with a (5-7, 7-5, 6-0) win at No. 2. Nayara Moraes helped the Blue Raiders with her (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) victory over junior Alison Storie at No. 6 to end the day.
“That was just a great college tennis match,” stated head coach Jeff Clark. “It’s tough coming up on the short end of that because we battled for almost four hours, but Middle Tennessee is a very good team and we knew that going in. When you look around and you have four three set matches going in a match, it’s still up for grabs but I give credit to Middle Tennessee. They were really tough in the singles today.”
Winthrop 4, ETSU 3
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The ETSU women's tennis team suffered just its second loss of the season Wednesday, falling narrowly at Winthrop in a tightly-contested non-conference match, 4-3.
The Eagles (4-6), who held a national ranking through the first five weeks of the season, earned the doubles point over ETSU by notching wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The two teams went on to split the singles points, with each squad winning three spots.
"Winthrop fought harder than us—it's as simple as that," ETSU coach Travis Sandlant said. "We need to still learn to close matches. We will continue to work on this area and hopefully be right for conference."
At No. 1 Doubles, ETSU's Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1 on the season.
Earning singles victories for ETSU were Choo, Jessica Brumit and Jayde Viccars.
With her win at No. 5 Singles, Brumit remained unbeaten on the season, improving her record to 6-0.
Elon 5, UNCG 2
ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team lost a tough road match at Elon, 5-2, Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Spartans drop to 4-3 on the season and Elon improves to 5-4 with the victory.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Kirsten Ward and Barbora Lazarova defeated senior Kayla Gammie and freshman Corinne Blythe, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Elon clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles as Olivia Lucas and Maria Camara edged senior Stephanie Falcon and freshman Blaine Boaz.
In the last doubles match, Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi outlasted sophomore Masey DeMoss and junior Jamie Grinberg, 8-7 (7-5), at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Elon took a 2-0 lead after Lazarova won in straight sets against Blythe, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Phoenix made it 3-0 after Braschi defeated junior Amy Ellis, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
UNCG picked up a point at No. 2 singles as Falcon earned a third set win against Lucas, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Falcon lost the second set, 4-6, but bounced back to win the third, 6-4.
Elon clinched the match as Kamilla Beisenova rallied back against DeMoss in the third set, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Gammie gave the Spartans their second point at No. 1 singles earning a tight third set win against Ward, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
