SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Randy Phillips has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 23-29. Phillips was a perfect 4-0 last week as the Spartans knocked off Davidson (6-1) and The Citadel (7-0).
Phillips improved to 10-4 this spring, all at No. 1 singles for UNCG. The Snellville, Ga., native opened the week with 6-3, 6-0 victory over Davidson’s Shamael Chaundhry. Phillips followed that performance with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win over The Citadel’s Artemie Amari.
Phillips was paired with Connor Thompson at No. 1 doubles, where the pair earned two victories last week. Phillips and Thompson downed Davidson’s Evan Watkins and Jack Riazzi 8-2 to open the week. The Spartans’ top tandem then posted an 8-4 victory over The Citadel’s Amari and Nick Bradley.
The Spartans have won four of their last five matches and return to the courts Tuesday when they visit Appalachian State.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Ismael Merino, Furman’s Adam Steryous, Mercer’s Sam Philp, Samford’s Trey Carter, Chattanooga’s John Peacey and Wofford’s Rob Galloway.
