Chattanooga 4, Furman 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the match knotted at three, Alison Storie held on for a 6-4, 6-2 win over freshman Alejandra Gil at flight six singles to lead Chattanooga past Furman, 4-3, Sunday at the UTC Tennis Courts in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Mocs won two of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Clair Mulyadi and Katie Polk defeated sophomore Karlee Bryde and freshman Harper Caswell, 8-2, at flight three, before the top two matches settled at 7-7 ties.  Furman senior Alex Moreno-Kaste and sophomore Ansley Speaks pulled out the 8-7 win over Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell at flight one, but Kelsey Coots and Kaylene Chadwell claimed the 8-7 victory over sophomore Blair Martin and freshman Alejandra Gil at number two to capture the point.

Chattanooga pushed the advantage to 2-0 after Jones downed Speaks, 6-3, 6-2, in the top-flighted singles contest, then Harper Caswell put the Paladins on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mulyadi at flight five.  Samantha Caswell extended the Mocs’ advantage to 3-1 after beating Bryde, 6-2, 6-2 at flight four, before the Paladins tied the match with wins at flights two and three to set up the decisive flight six contest.  Moreno-Kaste held on for a close 7-5, 7-5 advantage over Coots at flight two, and Martin outlasted Chadwell, 7-6, 6-2, at number three.


Samford 7, Wofford 0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford College women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 sweep at the hands of the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavillion.
 
Samford began the match sweeping doubles action. The Terriers came closest at No. 3, as Taylor Carlson and Samantha Russell saw an 8-4 setback. Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid paired at No. 1, falling 8-3, while Catherine Martin and Mareli Sanchez were blanked, 8-0, at No. 2.
 
In singles, Karas came the closest to earning a point for Wofford (8-8, 1-2 SoCon). The sophomore extended the match to three sets, eventually falling at No. 3, 6-1, 3-6, 10-4.
 
The remaining Terriers fell in straight sets. Russell (No.4, 6-1, 6-1), Martin (No. 1, 6-4, 6-2) and Audrey Coventry (No. 2, 6-4, 6-1) were the first three to fall. Next came Sanchez (6-3, 6-3) at No. 5 before Karas’ stretched her match to three sets. Reid was the last to finish, defeated 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 hole.


ETSU 7, Mercer 0

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The ETSU women's tennis team earned its fourth-consecutive victory Sunday, defeating Southern Conference opponent Mercer, 7-0, in Bristol, Tenn. With the win, ETSU improved its record to 10-3 overall, including a 3-0 mark in SoCon play.

ETSU began the day by taking the doubles point, collecting wins at all three positions.

Jessica Brumit and Jayde Viccars extended their doubles win streak to three matches with a 6-2 win over Liza Klyachkin and Laura Kelly at No. 2 Doubles.

The Buccaneers (10-3, 3-0 SoCon) swept singles play, winning all six spots.

ETSU newcomers Ioanna Markesini and Regina Nychytailova are each in the midst of four-match win streaks in singles play. Meanwhile, Lyn Yee Choo has won a team-best seven consecutive singles matches dating back to Feb. 14.


Appalachian State 7, Western Carolina 0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina women’s tennis team suffered its fifth-straight loss Sunday afternoon as former Southern Conference foe Appalachian State shut out the Catamounts 7-0. WCU was able to win the No. 1 doubles match but with a forfeit at No. 3 and the Mountaineers winning at No. 2, Appalachian State claimed the doubles point.

Senior Megan McLinden and junior Shannon Bettiol teamed up to win at No. 1 as they downed Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure 8-4. Freshman Montse Mesalles and junior Nicole Nielly fell at No. 2, 8-4.


Bettiol and Mesalles put up tough fights in singles action. Bettiol dropped the first set at No. 2 6-4 before coming back to win a tiebreaker in the second set 7-6 (4). The overall match had been clinched by the time Bettiol and Gabrielle Wreder went to the third set so they played a third set tiebreaker and Bettiol fell 12-10.


Mesalles won her opening set 6-2 but dropped the second set 6-4. Her match with McKayla Zupan also went to a third set after the overall match had been clinch so they also played a third set tiebreaker and Zupan came out victorious 10-4.


Nielly fell at No. 3 singles 7-6 (6), 6-1 while McLinden fell at No. 1 6-3, 6-2. Junior Erin Maguire also fell at No. 4 6-1, 6-3.
