Spartans Fall at UNCW Tuesday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team fell behind early and dropped a non-conference match on the road at UNCW, 5-2, Tuesday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.

The Spartans fall to 5-7 on the season and UNCW improves to 7-6 with the victory.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Annika Sillanpaa and Christina Kharkevitch defeated senior Kayla Gammie and freshman Corinne Blythe, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

UNCW clinched the doubles point with a 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles as Hollie Champion and Alix Theodossiou took down sophomore Masey DeMoss and junior Jamie Grinberg.

In the last doubles match, Alyssa Ritchie and Miller Hales defeated senior Stephanie Falcon and freshman Blaine Boaz, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Kharkevitch won in straight sets against junior Amy Ellis, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.

Sillanpaa gave UNCW a 3-0 lead after a straight sets win against Falcon, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Ritchie clinched the match for the Seahawks at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Gammie.

Theodossiou made it 5-0 after a 6-3, 6-2 win against Blythe at No. 4 singles.

UNCG won the final two matches to make the final score 5-2. Grinberg won in straight sets against Hales, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Boaz earned her third-straight victory after defeating Hamilton Lovett in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
