Softball Players of the Week Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Courtney Price and Chattanooga’s Cori Jennings have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.

Price batted .550 (11-of-20) with six runs and six RBIs over five games last week, as Western Carolina went 4-1 while taking two of three to open conference play against ETSU. The sophomore outfielder recorded four multi-hit games while recording a double, a triple and two home runs over the five-game stretch.

Price began the week with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a homer in game one of a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday. She then went 5-for-7 with a run, two RBIs and a triple in the Catamounts’ marathon, 12-inning affair versus ETSU in game one on Saturday. Price would record two hits in each of the final two games of the week with a combined three runs, two RBIs and a home run.

The native of Matthews, N.C. went 9-for-13 (.692) in the three-game series against ETSU with four runs, four RBIs and two extra-base hits. She claims the weekly honor for the first time this season

Jennings compiled a 1.56 ERA while going 2-1 in three appearances (two starts) for Chattanooga last week to earn her second SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor of the season. The freshman pitcher tossed 18.0 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on 19 hits with three walks against nine strikeouts.

Jennings was the tough-luck loser on Tuesday against Georgia State, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with no walks against one strikeout, as the Mocs fell 4-2. She bounced back with 7.0 innings pitched against UNCG on Saturday, allowing just one run on nine hits with five strikeouts to earn the victory. The native of Brush Creek, Tenn. then earned the win in relief on Sunday, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.
