Wofford finishes runner-up in tiebreak at Low Country Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Wofford and Princeton entered the final round of the seventh annual Low Country Intercollegiate level, and 18 additional holes could not settle the score on a wet Sunday afternoon in Hilton Head.
Both teams carded 21-over 309s in Saturday’s first round and came in with the exact some score Sunday. The leaderboard showed both teams tied at 42-over-par 618.
A predetermined tiebreak went Princeton’s way, awarding the Wofford women’s golf team a runner-up finish. The tiebreak was decided by the fifth, non-qualifying team scorer’s second-round. Princeton’s Tenley Shield shot a 12-over-par 84 to outduel Wofford junior Maegan Higgins’ 16-over-par 88.
The 15 teams and 81 competitors in the field fought through damp conditions Sunday after overnight showers softened the ground. About halfway through the final round, more rain came down. It made for a difficult four-to-five hole stretch before it stopped, allowing the tournament to finish on time.
Just as two teams sat atop the leaderboard, two individuals finished atop the player standings. Princeton’s Jordan Lippetz took a one-shot lead into Sunday and finished with another 1-over-par 73. However, she was caught by Savannah College of Art & Design’s Sofia Molinaro, who carded the low round of the tournament of 2-under-par 70. Lippetz and Molinaro were declared co-champions at 2-over 146.
Senior Lauren Dunbar was the highlight for Wofford. The Columbia, S.C., native shot a 2-over-par 74 to climb from sixth to alone in third on Sunday. Her round was solid with 16 pars and just two bogeys, closing out with five straight pars on the back.
Junior Emiley Pagrabs impressed, as well. Starting on the par-4 second, Pagrabs began her round with a string of six pars before her first bogey. She then hit a run of three bogeys in four holes from 10 to 13, but recovered nicely with six straight pars to close out her tournament with a 4-over-par 76. She climbed from 11th after day one to finish tied for eighth, earning the second top-10 of her career.
Wofford’s Saturday leader, Nicole Chin, also finished in the top 10. After a 3-over 75 in the first round, Chin carded 10 pars and eight bogeys on Sunday for an 8-over 80. She took a four-way tie for 10th, earning her third top-10 in the last five tournaments.
Another freshman, Lela Oakley, finished strong for the Terriers. She was one stroke better from Saturday, closing the tournament with two birdies en route to a 7-over 79. Oakley started the day in 24th and finished tied for 20th, earning the third top-20 of her rookie season.
Competing as an individual, Allyson Markiewicz took 66th (+33). Higgins tied for 70th (+35).
One tournament remains before the Southern Conference Championship. The Terriers take next week off before heading to Morganton, N.C., for the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. The tournament tees off April 5 at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
The Citadel finishes 13th at Low Country Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Citadel golf team wrapped up the 2014-15 regular season by finishing 13th of 15 teams at this weekend's Low Country Intercollegiate hosted by Upstate rival Wofford.
The Bulldogs fired a two-day total of 679 (339-340, +103) at the Moss Creek Golf Club South Course to finish in front of Presbyterian (680) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (734).
Eraina Manor (79-86—165, +21) brought home the best score for the Bulldogs as she placed herself in a tie with M.J. Nogay (Presbyterian) for 44th overall.
Kellie Anderson (82-84—166, +22) was one stroke behind her teammate as she wrapped up the event in 46th. Joining her among top-50 finishers was Cameron Little (85-82—167, +23), who capped off the event in a five-way tie for 48th.
Renata Sucha (93-86—181, +37) and Laura Simpson (122-115—237, +93) rounded out The Citadel's scorecard as it heads into the Southern Conference Championship on April 12-14 in Savannah, Ga.
Princeton (309-309—618, +42) captured the overall team title by virtue of a rules tiebreaker with Wofford. Meanwhile, Savannah College of Art & Design (313-308—621, +45) finished in third.
The individual crown was shared by Solia Molinaro (SCA&D) and Jordan Lippetz (Princeton) who fired a 146 to finish 2-over-par. Third went to Wofford's Lauren Dunbar, who finished four shots off the pace.
