UNCG finishes 19th at MountainView Collegiate Invitational
TUCSON, Ariz. – The UNCG women’s golf team posted its lowest 54-hole team score of the season and lowest in almost two years as the Spartans finished with a 914 score to place 19th overall at the 2015 MountainView Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri at the 6,227-yard MountainView Golf Club.
The Spartans finished the week with three of their best rounds of the season with a 303 in round one, a 305 in round two and a 306 in round three. All three rounds are among the five lowest rounds of the year and the Spartans have carded rounds under 310 for five straight rounds. UNCG’s three-round score of 914 is the lowest since the Spartans posted a 903 score at the 2013 Southern Conference Championships on April 14-16, 2013.
Junior Sammie Buchanan led the way individually for UNCG, finishing tied for 59th overall. Buchanan posted a 9-over-par 225 on the weekend with a 73 in round one, a 75 in round two and a 5-over-par 77 in round three. Sophomore Kristin Powers continued her strong play as she was tied for 70th overall with a 12-over par 228. Powers opened with a 3-over-par 75 before carding a 79 in round two. She ended her weekend strongly with a 2-over-par 74, the Spartans’ lowest round Saturday.
Junior Jessica Madsen finished tied for 87th overall with a 15-over-par 231 (77-75-79). This weekend marked the first time all year that Madsen has carded three rounds in the 70s. Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir added a 17-over-par 233 (79-78-76) as she also carded three rounds under 80. Sophomore Emily Kurey rounded out the lineup with a 23-over-par 239 (78-77-84).
Ohio State came home with the team title Saturday, posting an 8-under-par 856 (288-283-285) to win by five strokes over FIU. Meghan MacLaren of FIU won the individual honors with a 7-under 209 (69-69-71), winning by a stroke.
Wofford shares lead at Low Country Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Led by freshman Nicole Chin’s 3-over-par 75, the Wofford women’s golf team completed the opening round of the 7th annual Low Country Intercollegiate with a share of the lead. The tournament teed off Saturday morning at the South Course of the Moss Creek Golf Club.
Chin had one birdie and four bogeys to open the tournament, closing out strong with a string of eight pars. Her birdie came at the par-5, 488-yard fourth, as she carded a 2-over 38 on the front and 1-over 37 on the back. The freshman is tied for third, just two shots back of tournament leader Jordan Lippetz (+1) of Princeton.
Wofford posted an opening-round 21-over-par 309 at the par-72, 5,922-yard course. The Terriers held a nine-stroke lead on Princeton heading to the back nine, but the Tigers came on strong. As a team, Princeton was 1-under-par on the back nine to end up with a share of the lead at day’s end. Wofford, Princeton and High Point (+23) will play together as the tournament’s top three teams on Sunday.
Chin headed a trio of Terriers that sit inside the top 15. Despite carding a 10 on the par-5 11th, senior Lauren Dunbar came in with a 4-over-par 76. A two-time tournament winner in the fall, Dunbar had five birdies and was 1-under-par through 10 holes before the mishap on 11. She recovered with two birdies in her final three holes and is tied for sixth. Junior Emiley Pagrabs coupled a 1-over 37 on the front with a 5-over 41 on the back for an opening-round 6-over-par 78. Pagrabs is tied for 11th.
Freshman Lela Oakley also sits in the top 25. Oakley carded an 8-over-par 80 and is tie for 24th. Junior Maegan Higgins rounds out Wofford’s team scorers and sophomore Allyson Markiewicz is competing as an individual.
Sunday’s final round will tee off in a shotgun format at 9:30 a.m.
