Bucs Top UNCG Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team dropped its conference home opener against ETSU, 6-1, Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

The Spartans fall to 6-7 and are 0-3 in conference play. ETSU improves to 6-7 with the win and is 1-0 in SoCon action.

In doubles, the Bucs won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Rogerio Ribeiro and David Biosca took down freshman Connor Thompson and senior Randy Phillips, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, Diego Nunez and Conner Huertas defeated junior Daniel Mack and senior Cameron Smith, 8-5.

ETSU swept the doubles matches after Robert Herrera and Ismael Merino earned a 8-6 victory against sophomore William Albright and sophomore Warren Bryan at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Bucs took a 2-0 lead as Herrera defeated Bryan, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Ribeiro won in straight sets against Thompson, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Mack picked up the lone singles point for the Spartans with a straight sets win against Huertas, 6-4 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 singles.

Sebastian Yllera earned a 7-5, 6-2 win against Smith at No. 4 singles to give ETSU a 4-1 lead. Merino downed Albright, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

In the final match, Biosca outlasted Phillips at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Phillips suffered just his second loss of the season in a tough third set tiebreaker 10-5.
