Furman 4, Mercer 3

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman held off Mercer, 4-3, Friday in the Paladins’ Southern Conference opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Sophomore Adam Steryous and rookie Cameron Green teamed up to beat Austin Emmet and Oliver Snaider, 8-1, at flight two, and senior Jacob Behal and sophomore Juan Sheppard defeated Sam Philp and Anderson Scarpa, 8-6, at flight three.  The Bears were victorious at flight one, where Arnav and Arsav Mohanty downed juniors Matt Browne and Ben Horst, 8-5.

Furman extended its lead to 2-0 early in singles play when Behal topped Scarpa, 6-2, 6-2, at flight four, but Mercer claimed the next two points to tie the match, as Snaider downed Green, 7-6(8-6), 6-4, at number three, and Arnav Mohanty posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Steryous at flight one.

Browne put the Paladins back on top with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory versus Philp at flight two, and Behal clinched the team win for Furman after recording a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Manuel de Luis at flight five.  In the final match of the afternoon, Arsay Mohanty came from behind to defeat Sheppard, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4, at flight six.

Wofford 6, The Citadel 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team battled but it wasn't enough as the Wofford Terriers topped the Bulldogs Friday afternoon, 6-1, at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.

The Bulldogs slipped to 2-21 and 0-2 in the Southern Conference while Wofford evened out to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The afternoon started off with hard-fought doubles play, but ended with Wofford claiming the point to take the early lead.

In singles play, Nick Bradley continued his impressive rookie season by topping Wofford's Walker Heffron, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles spot.

The Terriers won the remainder of singles play in straight sets to claim the victory over The Citadel.
