Chattanooga sixth at Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Emily McLennan‘s 2-over-par 74 led the Chattanooga Mocs in Monday’s second round at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic. Chattanooga’s five combined to shoot 305 on Oak Point Golf Club and stand in sixth place with 18 holes to play.
McLennan had three birdies on her card and is tied for eighth at +2. Her 146 is five strokes behind leader Laura Fuenfstueck (CofC) at -3. Samford’s Bailey Gray is in second at -2 (142).
The trio of Agathe Sauzon, Cris Perez and Isabella Loza shot matching 77s. Sauzon is one behind McLennan, tied for 11th at 147 (+3). DeeDee Russell had the drop score with a 79 (+7).
College of Charleston took the lead with an even-par 288. Its +12 total of 588 Is 10 shots clear of Troy (598) in second. UNF is in third at 601.
The final round Tuesday takes the Mocs back to Osprey Point Golf Course. The 9 a.m., shotgun start has Chattanooga paired with Stetson and Elon on holes 4-6.
Gray remains second, Samford seventh at Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Samford women’s golfer Bailey Gray carded a second-round score of 1-over-par 73 on Monday to remain in second place out of 210 competitors at the 2015 Kiawah Island Classic being hosted by College of Charleston at the Osprey Point Golf Course.
Gray, the Bulldogs’ senior native of Trussville, Alabama, will head into Tuesday’s final round of competition with a 36-hole score of 2-under-par 142. On Monday, Gray opened the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a sizzling 3-under-par 69.
With 18 holes remaining in the 40-team tournament, Gray finds herself just a single stroke out of first place behind current leader Laura Fuenfstueck of College of Charleston. Fuenfstueck holds the best score of the competition with a two-round tally of 3-under-par 141 (70-71).
As a team, Samford bettered its score by three strokes Monday and remained in seventh place in the 40-squad competition.
The Bulldogs will enter Tuesday’s third round of action just one stroke behind Southern Conference rival Chattanooga (301-305=606) and nine strokes out of second place. The homestanding College of Charleston leads the competition with a 36-hole tally of 588 (300-288), while Troy currently sits in second place at 598 (298-300).
Individually for Samford, Gray paces the team with a two-day total of 142, while freshman Kate Collom follows at 153 (76-77). The Bulldogs’ sophomore Sydney Needham turned in her best round of the tournament Monday with a 3-over-par 75 and owns a 36-hole mark of 154 (79-75).
Senior Emily Stallings improved her daily score by four strokes in the second round as she posted a 77 on Monday. Heading into the final 18 holes of play, she holds a two-day total of 158 (81-77). Samford sophomore Haley Harrington fired a second-round mark of 78 and boasts a 36-hole tally of 159 (81-78).
The Samford University women’s golf team will resume play in the 2015 Kiawah Island Classic on Tuesday at 8 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs tee off in the final round of action being held at the Osprey Point Golf Course.
Western Carolina eighth at Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Western Carolina women's golf team slipped five spots in the team standings on Monday, carding a second round of 309 to stand eighth overall at 609 with 18 holes to play at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic. Leading the Catamounts is junior Kim Mitchell, who sits in a four-way tie for 18th place.
Paired with golfers from Southern Conference foe Samford and Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), Western Carolina's scoring five will tee off on the front nine of the Osprey Point course with a shotgun start between the sixth and eighth holes on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Mitchell carded five bogeys with one birdie on Monday to shoot 4-over-par 76 for a two-day score of 5-over-par 149. The Woodbridge, Va., native birdied the par-5 fourth to stand at 1-under-par through her first five holes before a bogey on the par-5 sixth moved her back to even. She made the turn at 1-over-par, charting three bogeys on the back nine to shoot 76.
Sophomore Ashley Thompson followed up her team-best, opening-round score of 1-under-par 71 with a 7-over-par 79 on Monday. Her classmate, Olivia Landino carded the team's lowest round on Monday at 2-over-par 74. The Hermitage, Pa., product recorded 12 pars and countered four bogeys with two birdies, moving into a tie for 27th overall at 152.
Rounding out WCU's scoring five are junior Mariah Hopkins in a tie for 67th at 158 (78-80) and sophomore Bethany Galloway in a tie for 78th at 159 (79-80) out of the 210-golfer field.
UNCG tied for 20th at Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – UNCG junior Sammie Buchanan moved up 31 spots in the individual standings and the Spartans as a team remained in the top half of the standings in the largest collegiate field of the season at the 2015 Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Classic hosted by the College of Charleston. The field of 40 teams is playing in the three-day, 54-hole event rotating at the Osprey Point and Cougar Point golf courses.
The Spartans are tied for 20th overall after posting a score of 312 on the 5,694-yard Osprey Point course. UNCG has a two-round score of 631 after opening the event with a 319 on the Cougar Point course on Sunday. The top 20 teams advance to the final day and will play on the Osprey Point course while teams in places 21-40 will play at Cougar Point. The Spartans are the final team to qualify for the top half of the standings and will spend round three on the Osprey Point course, where they played Monday.
Buchanan rose up the leaderboard Monday from 51st place into a tie for 20th place overall after carding an even-par 72. She posted two birdies on the front nine and just two bogeys on the back nine to go along with 14 par scores. She sits 6-over-par 150 (78-72) after the first 36 holes.
Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir is tied for 67th overall with a 14-over par 158 score. Bjornsdottir opened with a 78 Sunday before carding an 8-over par 80 in round two. Sophomore Kristin Powers was third on the team in a tie for 92nd place out of 210 golfers with a 16-over par 160 (80-80).
Senior Andrea Rangel is tied for 130th place with a 163 (83-80), while junior Jessica Madsen is tied for 156th place with a 167 (86-81).
