GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team defeated in-state rival East Carolina, 4-3, Wednesday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans earn their second-straight victory and improve to 6-6 on the season. ECU falls to 9-9 with the loss.
In doubles, UNCG took a 1-0 lead after claiming two of three doubles matches. Freshman Connor Thompson and senior Randy Phillips defeated Colin Roller and Tendai Tapfuma, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano earned a 6-2 win against junior Daniel Mack and senior Cameron Smith.
The Blue and Gold earned a close doubles point with a 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles as redshirt sophomore William Albright and sophomore Warren Bryan outlasted Ross Nigro and Fredric Lehfeldt.
In singles, the Spartans earned three singles wins to pick up a 4-3 victory against the Pirates. Phillips won in straight sets against Tapfuma, 6-3, 6-1. Phillips has won eight-straight matches and is a team best 11-1 at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 singles, ECU cut the lead to 2-1 after Soriano defeated Thompson, 6-4, 6-2. Roller even the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win against Albright at No. 6 singles.
Kasey Countee defeated Bryan, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in three sets at No. 5 singles. Smith won in the third set against Damien Brenard, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
In the final match, Mack battled back forcing a third set and clinching the victory at No. 3 singles against Lehfeldt, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Wofford 6, Davidson 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s tennis team won in commanding fashion on Wednesday afternoon, defeating former SoCon foe and current A-10 leader Davidson, 6-1, at the Reeves Tennis Center.
“We weren’t perfect today, but we were really good from start to finish,” said 15th-year head coach Rod Ray of the day’s match. “Davidson is a good team and we needed to exhibit a lot of toughness and determination in order to win.
“There are typically a lot of success stories behind the scene and today was no different. I believe that we can get better from here.”
The Terriers started off hot in doubles play and didn’t slow down. SoCon Player of the Month Haris Poric and junior Trevor Gotkowski kicked things off with a quick, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Jordan Hart and J.B. Gough. Shortly after, juniors David Sklar and Parks Thompson blanked Artem Khrapko and David Hager, 6-0. Seniors Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron led 5-2 over Evan Watkins and Jack Riazzi when the No. 1 match was abandoned.
In singles, Wofford (7-6, 1-0 Socon) continued to run through the competition. Sklar claimed the first singles win at No. 6, dropping Hart in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Galloway finished second at No. 1, grabbing a hard-fought, 6-3, 7-6 win to push the Terriers to a 3-0 lead.
Junior Parks Thompson clinched the match at the No. 5 hole. Thompson earned the third straight set victory of the day, toppling Hager, 6-3, 6-4.
Poric and freshman Parks Schoen also claimed victories for Wofford. Poric, played at No. 2 with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Khrapko, while Schoen went three-sets at No. 4 before defeating Ricky Saad 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Heffron had the matches’ lone setback, falling to Gough 6-3, 7-6 at the No. 3 spot.
