BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – After facing a 3-2 deficit, sophomore Kalli Karas and junior Mareli Sanchez each weathered three sets to help the Wofford women’s tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb at the Webb Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Karas and Sanchez were instrumental in the victory, winning the tying and clinching matches at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively. After a 6-0 win in the first set, Karas put away Gardner Webb’s Stina Magnusson in the third, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 to knot up the match at three all. Sanchez battled back from a 6-7 loss in the first to earn a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win to push Wofford to their seventh win of the season.

The Terriers started in a hole after dropping the doubles point. The matches finished in order of seeding, with Karas and freshman Lauren Reid the first to fall, 8-2 to Rokia Sacko and May Walker Mixon at No. 1. Sophomore Catherine Martin and Sanchez took spot No. 2, 8-3, over Magnusson and Teodora Stanciu, but an 8-7 setback for sophomore Taylor Carlson and freshman Samantha Russell gave the Runnin’ Bulldogs the 1-0 team edge.

“I’m really proud of what the girls accomplished today,” said fourth-year head coach Krissy Hall. “It takes a lot of heart to rally after dropping the doubles point, and the girls showed that they have what it takes.”

In singles, Martin equalized quickly for the Terriers at No. 1, when Yasmin Doost retired due to injury. Gardner-Webb won two quick matches, to grab the 3-1 lead, taking down Reid at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1, and senior Audrey Coventry at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4.

Russell spurred the Wofford comeback at No. 4, where she took down Sarah Rieckmann in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, before Karas and Sanchez put it away.
