Chattanooga 6, The Citadel 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team snapped a two-match slide with a strong 6-1 win over The Citadel today.  The Mocs swept the doubles and won five of six singles to even their Southern Conference record at 1-1.

Juniors Luke Saunders and John Peacey teamed at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season and quickly dispatched The Citadel’s Peter Bleach and Nick Bradley (8-3).  Sophomores Lucas Plesky and Nic Wilson followed with an 8-4 win over Artemie Amari and Oliver Dedding at No. 2.  Senior Pavels Grigorjevs and junior Nick Wingord finished off the Bulldogs with an 8-4 win over Connor Grady and Ryan Templet at No. 3.

UTC had won the doubles point five times coming into today’s action.  However, only twice had they turned strong opening play into a team win.

Today the Mocs kept the momentum and won the first three singles matches to clinch the win.  Peacey was first off the court with a (6-1, 6-0) win over Templet at No. 2.  Junior Gino Delavalle followed with his (6-0, 6-2) win against Grady at No. 5.  Junior Luke Saunders clinched the win with a (6-0, 6-1) win at No. 3.

Wingord and Plesky closed out the scoring with wins at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively.  It was Plesky’s first match in the top spot as he improved to 6-5 in spring singles.

 

Wofford 5, Lamar 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After trailing 2-1 to the visiting Lamar Cardinals, the Wofford College men’s tennis team dug deep, rallying to a 5-2 victory on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.

Sophomore Haris Poric took the clinching match at No. 2 for the Terriers. Facing off against Lamar’s Michael Feucht, the Sydney, Australia native won the third singles point with a straight set victory, 7-6, 7-5, locking up the match.

The Terriers jumped ahead to an early lead in doubles. Seniors Walker Heffron and Rob Galloway faced a nationally ranked duo in No. 39 Jeandr Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis. The Lamar two-some prevailed in a tightly contested, 7-5 battle. The Terriers then took the next two matches to earn the doubles point., Poric and junior Trevor Gotkowski played at No. 2, beating Feucht and Benny Schweizer, 7-5, followed by a victory at No. 3 where juniors arks Thompson and David Sklar took down Juuso Laitinen and Mikko Rajamaki.

Lamar didn’t make things easy for Wofford (6-6, 1-0), taking the first two matches in singles play. Hoogenboezem won the first match at No. 4, defeating freshman Parks Schoen, 6-3, 6-4. Next Schweizer topped Heffron, 7-6, 6-4.

Wofford wouldn’t allow Lamar another point. Gotkowski, who played at No. 6, defeated Steven McMullan in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. The Terriers took the lead when Sklar bested Laitinen at No .5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, before Poric took the deciding match.

Galloway also earned the win at No. 1 singles, downing Lis. Galloway trailed 3-0 in the second set before rallying 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the fifth and final point.

 

UNCG 4, Richmond 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team dropped the doubles point but rallied back to defeat Richmond, 4-1, Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts. 

The Spartans improve to 5-6 on the season and Richmond falls to 7-6 with the loss. 

In doubles, the Spiders won two of three doubles match to claim a 1-0 lead. Junior Daniel Mack and senior Cameron Smith earned a 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Jonathan Quenard and Caleb Troy.

At No. 1 doubles, Freshman Connor Thompson and senior Randy Phillips lost to Ethan Dunbar and Jacob Dunber, 8-4.

Richmond clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles as James Aronson and Canyon Teague defeated redshirt sophomore William Albright and sophomore Warren Bryan.

In singles, the Spartans rallied winning four-straight singles matches to defeat the Spiders, 4-1. Albright tied the match at 1-1 after a straight sets win against Aronson, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Smith gave UNCG a 2-1 lead after a win at No. 4 singles against Troy, 6-1, 6-4. Phillips earned another victory at No. 1 singles in straight sets against Ethan Dunbar, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1).

Bryan clinched the win against Quenard, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in straight sets at No. 5 singles.

Thompson won the first set against Jacob Dunbar, 6-4 but fell in the second set 5-7 as the match went unfinished. Mack won the first set against Teague, 6-3 but was trailing 5-6 when the match was called.


VCU 4, Furman 1

TAMPA, Fla. – Furman fell to VCU, 4-1, in the final round of the USF Spring Break Tournament at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla.

The Rams won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Catalin Fifea and Wilder Pimentel teamed up for a 6-2 victory over senior Jacob Behal and junior Ben Horst at flight two, and Batlle Rodriguez and Michael Viscek downed freshman Stefan Rhodes and sophomore Juan Sheppard, 6-4, at number three.  The flight one match was unfinished.

In singles play, Daryl Monfils topped Horst, 7-6, 6-3, at flight three, and Joseph Cohen defeated Behal, 6-4, 7-6, at number four.  Rodriguez beat Rhodes, 6-4, 6-2, at number six.  Furman's lone point came at number five singles, where Sheppard posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pimentel.  Matches at flights one and two were unfinished.
