Furman tied for second at 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Freshman Alice Chen (+1) carded a 72 Friday to tie for fifth place to lead the 21st-ranked Furman women’s golf team in the opening day of the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,085-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
Chen, a native of Princeton, N.J, birdied No. 4 and made the turn at an even 36 then scored birdies on two of the final three holes to finish the round 1-over-par, just two strokes behind leaders Nancy Xu of Columbia and Ines Lescudier of Kennesaw State, who each scored an opening-round 70.
Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (+2) recorded three birdies to tie for seventh place after carding a 73 in Friday’s round, while rookie Reona Hirai (+5) is tied for 16th after birdieing No. 13 to score a 76. Senior Laura DeMarco (+6) birdied the opening hole, tying for 25th with a 77, and junior Valentina Romero (+10) is tied for 53rd entering Saturday’s play.
Kennesaw State (+11) leads the tournament after scoring a 296 in the opening round. Furman (+14), No. 40 GRU Augusta (+14), and No. 43 Coastal Carolina (+14) are tied for second at 298, while Chattanooga (+18) rounds out the top five after carding a 302 in opening-round play.
Second round play of the 54-hole tournament begins Saturday at 9 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday. The Paladins tee off of No. 1 at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday.
Chattanooga fifth at 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs shot 302 to open the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate at Forest Hills Golf Club on Friday. Chattanooga rolled in just four birdies.
Emily McLennan had three of the four birdies on the counting cards en route to shooting 2-over-par 73. She was equal opportunity, earning her birds each on a par-3, 4 and 5, including the 18th hole, to move into the top 10. She is tied for seventh, three strokes out of the lead held by Columbia’s Nancy Xu and Kennesaw State’s Ines Lescudier.
Two other Mocs are in the top 20 alongside McLennan. Agathe Sauzon is tied for 13th at +4 (75), while Sarah Dolmovich is tied in 16th after a 76 (+5). Cris Perez added a 78 (+7) to the team. Megan Woods had the drop score with an 82.
KSU has the early lead with Friday’s 296. Host GRU Augusta is tied in second at 298 with No. 21 Furman and Coastal Carolina, with the Mocs lurking another four shot back.
Round two starts Saturday morning on hole No. 1. The Mocs are paired with Coastal Carolina and Troy. Woods is the first off the tee at 10:20 a.m., with Perez (10:30), Dolmovich (10:40), Sauzon (10:50) and McLennan (11:00) close behind.
ETSU 10th at 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate
AUGUSTA, Ga. – ETSU sophomore Rachel Pollock carded a team-best round of 4-over-par 75 during Friday’s first round play in the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
Finishing the day tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard, Pollock was one of two ETSU players to post rounds in the 70s during the opening round, as junior teammate Vivienne Chin ended the day at 6-over 77 to finish tied for 13th.
As a team, the Bucs are currently 10th on the team leaderboard after ending the day with a score of 314. Former Atlantic Sun Conference rival Kennesaw State leads the team competition following a round of 296, ending the day two strokes better than host GRU Augusta.
Along with Pollock and Chin, other ETSU results included a tie for 53rd by freshmen Allyson Dunn and Dominika Czudkova, while sophomore Linda Dobele is tied for 59th.
The Bucs will continue with second round play on Saturday, while third and final-round action is set for Sunday.
Mercer 11th at 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Mercer women's golf team is positioned 11th after Friday's opening round of the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate, hosted by GRU Augusta. Leading the way for the Bears on day one were senior Sarah Louie Brown and freshman Jaelyn Tindal, who each turned in rounds of 78.
Mercer's day-one total of 321 was two strokes better than both UNCG and Marshall. The Bears are seven back of ETSU, while Kennesaw State leads the field at 296.
Brown and Tindal are tied for 33rd place individually. Sophomore Marin Hanna carded an 80 and is tied for 47th. Freshman Brett Beavers fired an 85 and is tied for 69th, while freshman Hannah Mae Deems posted a 91 and is slotted 74th.
Saturday's second round is slated for a 9 a.m. start.
UNCG tied for 12th at 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The UNCG women’s golf team opened the 3M Jaguar Invitational in a tie for 12th place after the first round Friday at the Forest Hills Golf Club. Senior Berglind Bjornsdottir led the way in 16th place overall in the first of three rounds in the 54-hole event.
Bjornsdottir posted a 5-over-par 76 on the par-71 course Friday to sit in a tie for 16th overall. She had a strong back nine of her round with birdies on holes Nos. 1, 2, and 5 after teeing off on hole No. 10. The Spartans as a team are tied for 12th overall with Marshall after posting a 39-over-par 323 score.
Sophomore Kristin Powers was the Spartans’ second finisher with an 8-over-par 79 as she posted 11 par scores on the day to sit in 39th place. Junior Sammie Buchanan is in 66th place with a 12-over par 83.
Sophomore Emily Kurey posted a 14-over par 85, while senior Andrea Rangel rounded out the lineup with 19-over-par 90. Sophomore Maddie MacClurg played as an individual and posted an 11-over-par 82 to sit in a tie for 82nd place.
The Spartans will tee off in round two Saturday at 10:35-11 a.m. from hole No. 10.
