Jacksonville 18, Robert Morris 13
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Chase Miller has been simmering for a while and finally bubbled over Wednesday with a second half offensive onslaught that led Jacksonville University past Robert Morris, 18-13, at D B. Milne Field.
The 18 goals mark the second highest in school history for the Dolphins trailing only the 24 the program had at Mercer on Feb. 23, 2011. Jacksonville's 14 assists meanwhile equaled a school mark first accomplished against Sacred Heart on March 13, 2010.
Miller, from Lancaster, Pa., came off the bench and scored four goals in the third period and another in the fourth to ignite the Dolphins (3-2) to the win. The five goals are a career-high for Miller. Teammate Tom Moore contributed four goals and a school-record seven assists. Moore's seven assists are also tied for the second highest single game total by anyone in the nation this season.
Miller's first goal came with 10:35 to play in the third and tied the game at 10 and began the Dolphins on a 9-3 run to end the game. He followed that with a goal at the 8:25 mark then scored twice within 17 seconds toward the end of the period.
Moore contributed four goals along with his seven assists which smashed the previous school record of four reached five other times by four players. Attacker Chase McIntyre had four scores and an assist in the game. He and Moore are now tied for the team lead in goals with 13 each.
Even though Robert Morris (1-5) scored six times in the first period, JU goal keeper Bass Barfield kept things from getting out of hand with six critical saves in the first 15 minutes.
The Dolphins had taken a 4-3 lead on goals from Austin Collins, Tom Moore, McIntyre and Dakota Rohlin but the Colonials scored three times in the last three minutes to lead 6-4 after one.
Moore, who also had three first half assists, and McIntyre both completed first-half hat tricks with a pair of goals each which accounted for all JU scoring in the second period. The Dolphins outscored Robert Morris in the period to go to the half down, 9-8.
Moore's brother, Rob, added a goal for the Dolphins as did Quint Miller and Fernando Milanes.
The Dolphins begin play in the Southern Conference Saturday when they travel to VMI.
Richmond 8, Mount St. Mary's 7
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sophomore goalie and reigning Southern Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive player of the Week Benny Pugh recorded his 15th save of the game on a potential game-tying goal with a minute remaining as the Richmond Spiders won their first road contest of the season, 8-7 at Waldron Family Stadium over Mount St. Mary’s Wednesday.
Sophomore J.P. Forester recorded his second-straight hat trick and added an assist in the victory, to push the Spiders to 4-2 on the season and record the team’s second two-game win streak of the year. The Mountaineers dropped to 2-4 on the season.
The game was back and forth early. Forester got his assist on the first goal of the game, by Dan Ginestro a little less than 90 seconds in for the lead.
After Mount St. Mary’s posted two goals for their first lead of the game midway through the first, the Spiders scored three straight goals to finish out the quarter for a 4-2 lead.
MSM posted a pair of quick goals to start the second to tie the game, but Forester and sophomore Mitch Goldberg, playing about an hour from home, pushed the lead back out to two and the Spiders never trailed after that point.
The Spiders won just four of the 19 faceoffs, but the defense came up big, causing 11 turnovers. Sophomore Brendan Hynes set a season high with five caused turnovers in the game.
Richmond will host No. 2 North Carolina this Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
