Samford?s Needham Named SoCon Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford sophomore Sydney Needham has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 4-10. The selection is made by the league office.

Needham takes the honor for the second time in three weeks after turning in her fourth top-10 finish of the 2014-15 season. The Carrollton, Ga., native turned in a 5-over 221 at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla., last week, finishing in sole possession of fifth place in the 105-golfer field. As a team, Samford finished fourth out of 18 teams.

Needham turned in a 4-over 76 in Monday’s first round before shaving one stroke off that mark in the second round to sit in a tie for 13th entering Tuesday’s final round of play. Needham charged into the top five with a 2-under 70 Tuesday, firing the second-best round and one of just four under-par rounds on the day.

Samford returns to action when it hosts the Samford Intercollegiate at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala., on March 23-24.
