UNCG 6, Norfolk State 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team has won two-straight matches after defeating Norfolk State, 6-1, Sunday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans improve to 2-1 on the season while Norfolk State falls to 1-6 with the loss.
In doubles, UNCG took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Randy Phillips and freshman Connor Thompson defeated Pascal Domnik and Antonio Pajic, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
Norfolk State won at No. 2 doubles as Daniel Grauel and Fateh Singh defeated senior Cameron Smith and Redshirt sophomore William Albright, 8-5.
In the final doubles match, freshman Logan Walker and Redshirt freshman James Gray defeated Igor Braga and Shaheed Mourillon, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Blue and Gold won five of six singles matches to win easily against Norfolk State. Phillips won in straight sets against Domnik, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Mack defeated Braga, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Junior Gaston Murray improved to 2-0 after defeating Singh, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Thompson remained undefeated against Grauel, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Albright won in straight sets not letting his opponent Mourillon win a single game at 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. In the final match,
Tennessee Tech 5, Chattanooga 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team lost a 5-2 match against Tennessee Tech today. The Mocs won one doubles and two singles matches in the loss to the Eagles.
Chattanooga lost the doubles point in the early going, only winning one of the three doubles matches, but came storming back with two straight singles wins.
Junior Gino Delavalle tied it up for the Mocs with a (6-0, 6-1) win over Carlos Tejas at No. 5. Sophomore Lucas Plesky followed with a (6-3, 6-4) victory over Alvaro Cintas at No. 4 to give the Mocs a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Eduardo Mena brought the Golden Eagles back with a (6-4, 7-5) win over Saunders at No. 3. Alberto Esteban also helped Tennessee Tech with a (6-3, 6-4) win over Senior Pavels Grigorjevs at No. 2.
The No. 1 match put Tennessee Tech over the edge to secure the victory as Alex Arovin posted a (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) win over junior Nick Wingord. Sophomore Derrick Brown fought well at No. 6, but recorded a (5-7, 7-6 (6), 0-1) loss to Othan Lima as the match came to an end.
South Carolina 4, Wofford 2
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s tennis team held their own, pulling out two singles victories before eventually falling to the nationally-ranked South Carolina squad, 4-2, at the USC Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
Wofford (3-3) nabbed wins at the top two spots in singles play, as senior Rob Galloway and sophomore Haris Poric paved the way for the Terriers. Galloway, who played at the No. 1 spot, took down Andrew Adams in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, finishing third in singles.
Poric played at No. 2 for the Terriers, knocking off nationally ranked foe No. 83 Andrew Schafer. Poric rallied after dropping the second set, dispatching of Schafer 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 for his fourth singles victory of the season.
The duo also competed at the No. 1 position against No. 46 Thomas Mayronne and Harrison O’Keefe. They were tied at 5-all when the match was discontinued due to Wofford losses at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
“Today was the second of two very close matches this weekend,” said head coach Rod Ray. “I'm proud of how we competed today. We're making great progress and getting closer to where we want to be. We're enjoying the competition and I believe we will be much better moving forward.”
In doubles, Schaefer and Sam Swank nabbed the first match from Trevor Gotkowski and David Sklar, taking down the Terriers, 6-2. Senior Walker Heffron and junior Parks Thompson played No. 118 Kyle Koch and Adams tightly, eventually falling, 7-5, allowing the Gamecocks to secure the doubles point.
When it came to singles play, the Gamecocks struck first. O’Keefe defeated Thompson at No. 4, taking a 6-1, 6-1 win to double the South Carolina score. Next, Koch finished against Heffron at No. 3. The senior played Koch close the second set, before eventually falling 6-2, 7-5. Galloway and Poric nabbed the next two points, cutting the Wofford deficit to one. Freshman Parks Schoen fell in the decisive match, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Swank. Classmate Jack Thomas played at No. 6, trailing Mayronne, 6-2, 1-0 when Schoen’s match concluded.
