SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina runner Henry Kiedy has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and teammate Jared Johnson has been named the Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. Western Carolina runner Tayla Carter has been named the Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week while teammate Chenell Bryan was picked as the Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Kiedy took first place in both the 200-meter and 400-meter races at the Thundering Herd Invitational last weekend with SoCon-best times of 22.08 and 48.10, respectively. The native of Knightdale, N.C. was also a member of the 4x400 relay squad that posted a SoCon-leading time of 3:16.60.
Johnson won the 35lb weight throw at the Thundering Herd Invitational with a personal-best and SoCon-leading toss of 60-4. The junior finished second in the shot put at the same event with personal-best performance of 50-4.
Carter ran a 7.49 in the 60-meter race and a 24.35 in the 200-meter race at the Thundering Herd Invitational, both SoCon-best marks this season. The junior also ran a leg on the Catamounts’ winning 4 x 400m relay squad that posted a SoCon-best time of 3:47.11 at the same event.
Bryan won the long jump at the Thundering Herd Invitational with a leap of 19-2 last weekend. The sophomore currently leads the SoCon in the long jump with a mark of 19-5 ½.
