UNCG Earns Comeback 5-2 Victory Against Charlotte

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team fell behind 2-0 and roared back with five unanswered runs to defeat Charlotte, 5-2, Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans improve to 5-3 on the season while Charlotte falls to 5-2 on the year. Game two was canceled due to a impending winter storm.

Freshman pitcher Alicia Bazonski earned the victory in the complete game effort. Bazonski is 2-0 after throwing seven innings and allowed two earned runs with a strikeout. Lexi Betancourt took the loss (2-2) after going the distance allowing five earned runs off seven hits.

Sophomore Tory Wright finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Redshirt freshman Sidney Grkman also was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win.

Charlotte took the lead with a two-out two-run home run from senior Jackie Kleinsmith to give the 49ers a 2-0 advantage in the fourth inning.

The Spartans answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth all with two outs. With two outs, junior Lindsay Thomas singled up the middle and Wright blasted a double off the centerfield wall to plate two runs. Grkman followed with a single to centerfield to give UNCG a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Spartans plated two more runs with two outs to increase their lead to 5-2. Lindsay Thomas worked a two-out walked and Wright followed with a double into the right centerfield gap to score Thomas. Grkman lined a single down the right field line to push the score to 5-2.

In the seventh inning, Bazonski closed the game with a swinging strikeout against Jessica Plemmons with two runners on to seal the victory.

The Blue and Gold return to host the Blue/Gold Challenge this weekend weather permitting.
