Samford?s Needham Named Women?s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford sophomore Sydney Needham has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 18-24. The selection is made by the league office.

Needham tied for eighth out of 62 golfers at the USA Women’s Invitational, hosted by South Alabama at the Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. Needham shot a three-round total of 231, opening with a 77 and a 74 in the first and second rounds, respectively, to sit third after Monday’s action before slipping to eighth with an 80 on Tuesday. As a team, Samford finished fifth in the 11-team field.

The top-10 finish was the second straight for the Carrollton, Ga., native, who also tied for third at the season-opening Lady Bulldog Individual Invitational on Feb. 7.

The weekly honor is the first of Needham’s career and the first for Samford since 2009.

Samford returns to action at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C., on March 1-3.
