UNCG 84, Furman 49

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG connected on nine of its first 11 three-point tries, including four from R.J. White, and built a 19-point first half lead en route to an 84-49 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men’s basketball action on Sunday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

White, a 6-foot-8 post player, drilled four three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes and UNCG (9-20, 5-11 SoCon) held Furman (7-20, 4-12 SoCon) without a field goal from the 11:15 mark of the first period until John Davis III buried a three-pointer with 1:16 remaining in the opening half that came with the Paladins already trailing 41-20.

Leading 41-25 at the break, the Spartans began the second half on a 14-5 run to put the game out of reach.  UNCG finished the afternoon shooting 51.7 percent from the field, including 15-of-25 from behind the arc.  The Spartans connected on 9-of-13 three-point tries in the first half.

White, 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-for-4 from three-point range, led five Spartans in double figures with 18 points and added nine rebounds.  Nicholas Paulos scored 15 points, while Kayel Locke contributed 14 points and nine rebounds.  Diante Baldwin and Marvin Smith rounded out the Spartans’ double-figure scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Junior Stephen Croone scored a team-high 16 points for the Paladins with an 8-for-10 effort at the foul line.  Freshman Daniel Fowler totaled 10 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kris Acox added seven points and 10 rebounds.

Furman shot 37 percent from the field, including 3-for-19 from three-point range.  UNCG managed a 40-26 edge on the glass and outscored Furman 20-6 on points off of turnovers.
