SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman sophomore Taylor Totland has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 7-17. The selection is made by the league office.
Totland finished in a tie for first at the Florida State Match-Up over the weekend, falling in a playoff for medalist honors after Bianca Fabrizio of Texas A&M sank a 40-foot birdie on the second playoff hole. The 66-player field featured eight players ranked in the top 50 nationally. As a team, Furman won the event, besting four top-25 teams.
Totland fired a three-day total of 214 (73-70-71) to finish 2-under, climbing from sixth to second to first over the course of the event. The Tinton Falls, N.J., native, ranked 33rd nationally, posted 10 birdies during the tournament.
Totland’s effort helped No. 26 Furman to its best round in school history Sunday, with the 281 team mark besting the former record by two strokes. The Paladins opened the tournament in ninth place after day one but roared up the standings to fourth on day two and rallied for the win with their record final round.
Furman (301-294-281=876) finished seven strokes clear of No. 9 Mississippi State and No. 17 Virginia, who tied for second at 883. No. 2 South Carolina finished fourth at 884 and No. 16 Texas A&M and Kennesaw State tied for fifth at 885.
Totland and The Paladins return to action March 6-8 at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
