SIUE?s Coomer Named to NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Jason Coomer, SIUE’s senior associate director of athletics for external affairs, has been appointed to the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee. His four-year term on the committee begins in September.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Jason as well as SIUE wrestling,” said SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt. “I truly believe this reflects the commitment SIUE has made to Division I wrestling over the last five years. It validates that others realize we are committed to becoming nationally competitive in wrestling.”

Coomer, who has served as the senior associate athletic director since 2012 and has been with SIUE since 2008, will become one of nine members nationally that determine the rules for collegiate wrestling. His appointment runs through August 2019. The committee generally meets in April, one month after the NCAA Division I Championships, to review and present rules for the next collegiate season.

“I look forward to the opportunity to help shape the future of college wrestling and to assist in any way possible,” said Coomer. “The future growth of the sport is of paramount importance, and I am happy to be a small part of the process.”

The NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee is made up of four Division I members, two Division II members, two Division III members and a secretary-rules editor.

Current members of the committee include Augsburg College Director of Athletics Jeff Swenson, Wyoming head coach Mark Branch, Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson, Northern Iowa head coach Doug Schwab, San Francisco State head coach Lars Jensen and Alma College head coach Todd Hibbs.
