Mercer 7, Alabama State 0

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mercer men's tennis team steamed past Alabama State, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon.

Mercer's 7-0 victory is the first of the season, as the Bears moved to 4-7 overall.

Arsav Mohanty's (6-4, 6-2) win at the number 5 spot clinched the match for Mercer. Only one Bear had to play to three sets, as Anderson Scarpa dropped his first set and then rallied to win (4-6, 6-2, 10-7).


North Florida 4, Furman 1

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – North Florida outlasted Furman, 4-1, Sunday at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Ospreys won two of three doubles matches to claim the opening point.  Jack Findel-Hawkins and Norbert Nemcsek teamed up to beat juniors Matt Browne and Ben Horst, 6-3, at flight one, then Caio Gomes and Julian Bradley defeated senior Jacob Behal and freshman Stefan Rhodes, 6-2, at number three.  The flight two match was unfinished.

In singles play, Bradley topped Horst, 6-4, 6-0, at flight four to push the lead to 2-0, before freshman Cameron Green put the Paladins on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nemcsek at number three.  Gomes came from behind in the second set to defeat Browne, 6-4, 6-4, at flight two to extend the advantage to 3-1, then Zach Goldberg clinched the team win with a 7-5, 6-3 win versus sophomore Juan Sheppard at flight six. 

Matches at flights one and five were unfinished.  Findel-Hawkins, who is ranked No. 70 in singles nationally, won set one 7-5, at number one, but sophomore Adam Steryous was leading the second set, 5-3, in a closely contested match.  Behal was leading Lasse Muscheites, 7-6(2), 4-3, at flight five.


Charlotte 6, UNCG 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 6-1 loss at Charlotte Sunday night at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club.

The Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season and the 49ers improved to 3-1 with the victory. 

In doubles, Charlotte jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after winning two of three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, senior Randy Phillips and freshman Connor Thompson continued their winning ways after a 6-1 victory against Vikram Hundal and Jack Williams.

The 49ers won the next two matches to claim the doubles point after Alex Calott and Forrest Edwards defeated juniors Daniel Mack and Gaston Murray, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Paul Cisti and Jordi Massalle Ferrer took down freshman Logan Walker and redshirt sophomore William Albright, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Charlotte won five of six singles matches to complete a 6-1 victory against the Spartans.

At No. 5 singles, Williams won in straight sets against Murray, 6-2, 6-3 to make it 2-0 49ers. Hundal defeated Mack in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Warren Bryan fell to Calott in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Thompson remained undefeated in singles with a straight sets victory against Nate Shanok, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Senior Cameron Smith lost to Ferrer, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. In the final match, Phillips battled but fell short to Edwards, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
