Three Paladin Records Fall In Second Day Of Iowa State Classic

AMES, Iowa - Freshman Jacquelyn Crow and sophomores Allie Buchalski and Troy Reeder set new Furman indoor track and field records Saturday in the second day of the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Over the two-day meet, the Paladins broke five school records and had eight personal bests among the eight athletes competing.

Crow, who hails from Lebanon, Ohio, posted a mile time of 4:51.53 for 13th place overall and finished as the top freshman in the field. Her time bested the former record of 4:54.35, set by Erin Barker in 2012.

Buchalski, a native of Johns Creek, Ga., recorded a time of 9:32.47 in the 3,000m, placing 11th and breaking the former record of 9:33.10, set last month by current senior Sinead Haughey. In the men's 3,000m, sophomore Troy Reeder improved upon his current school record by two seconds, turning in a time of 8:02.73 and claiming ninth place. Senior Tripp Hurt finished 16th in the race with a time of 8:09.44, while sophomore Brock Baker was 22nd at 8:13.60.

Following an off weekend, Furman will compete at the Southern Conference Championships in Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 27-28.

 

Furman's Hinkle Wins 3,000m At High Point Team Challenge

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore Tanner Hinkle won the 3,000m with a time of 8:25.75 to lead the Paladin indoor track and field team Thursday at the High Point Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Furman teams combined to record 13 individual top 10 finishes at the meet.

The Furman men's team had three athletes place in the top 10 in the 800m, the mile, and the 3,000m events. Senior William Ivey turned in a time of 1:53.48 to claim second place in the 800m, just .48 of a second off the Paladin record of 1:53.00. Sophomore Nate Riech was third in the event at 1:56.98, while freshman Hayden Cox placed fifth with a time of 1:59.92.

In the mile, senior James Perez finished second with a time of 4:15.23, followed closely by Riech at 4:17.09, who took fourth place. Freshman Austin Sprague turned in a time of 2:01.59 for ninth place. Following Hinkle's win in the 3,000m, sophomore Matt Lange tallied a third-place finish at 8:33.17, followed in fourth place by sophomore Lee Shearer who completed the race in 8:43.99.

The Paladin women had three athletes place among the top 10 in the mile race, as sophomore Anna McBride finished second with a time of 5:03.20, and rookie Becca Cooley recorded a time of 5:07.99 for sixth place. Sophomore Ann Sisson placed tenth after crossing the line in 5:12.84. Rookie Emma Mashburn placed second in the 3,000m, turning in a time of 10:20.32.

The Paladins will compete at Iowa State Track Classic in Ames, Iowa, Feb. 13-14.

 

Women Take Home Samford Invitational Crown

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Competing at the same venue that will host the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in two weeks, the Western Carolina women's team won the Samford Invitational and the men finished fourth. Two school records fell while several season best performances were established. Senior Xaviera Bass took down Nicole Okolo's school record in the 60m hurdles while senior Alisha Bradshaw broke her own school record for the second time this season in the shot put.

Okolo posted a time of 8.50 at the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 60m hurdles but Bass downed that time Friday afternoon with a blazing 8.46 in the finals as she took home the individual event title Bass qualified first in the event with a time of 8.56 in the preliminaries but shaved a tenth of a second off her time in the finals. Sophomore Kayla Williams also finished in the top-10 in the event as she qualified eighth in the preliminaries and ended up finishing seventh with a time of 8.71 in the finals.

Bradshaw, who broke the school record in the shot put earlier this season at the Appalachian Open, added two tenths of a meter to her previous record with a toss of 14.62m (47-11.50) as she finished second Friday afternoon. Sophomore Hailey Cook finished sixth in the event as well with a toss of 13.86m (45-05.75). Bradshaw also finished fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.07m (52-08.75).

The women currently lead the meet with a score of 81.2307 ahead of 13 other teams including Georgia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte and Liberty. The men are tied for fourth with University of Louisiana-Lafayette with 57 points. Leading the event is Coastal Carolina followed by Samford and Georgia Tech. There are a total of 13 teams in the field.

The men posted a season-best time of 3:16.27 in the 4x400m relay as they took home the win. The Catamount's "B" relay team finished eighth with a time of 3:22.13.

Junior Jared Johnson was the men's top individual finisher as he came in second in the weight throw with a toss of 18.34m (60-02.00). Sophomore Scott Peretin also competed in the event and came in eighth with a distance of 15.21m (49-10.75). Johnson and Peretin also finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the men's shot put. Johnson tossed the shot 14.81m (48-07.00) while Peretin's throw went 14.77m (48-05.50).

Junior Tayla Carter qualified second in the women's 60m with a time of 7.57. She then blazed to a second-place finish in the finals with a season-best mark of 7.48 which was just .05 away from another school record. Carter also took home third-place honors in the 200m with a time of 24.46.

Four Catamounts finished in the top-10 in the men's 400m led by freshman Dakota Lamont who completed the event in 48.60 for fourth overall. Freshman Henry Kiedy came in fifth at 48.70 while senior Aaron Tribble placed sixth with a time of 49.43. Senior Demari Boswell rounded out the quartet with a ninth-place finish in 49.76.

Senior Genevieve Emrick took home third in the women's 400m after posting a time of 55.41.

Sophomore Anisia Starege and junior Molly Fagan tied for third in the women's high jump as they each cleared 1.60m (5-03.00).

Seniors Abraham Faison and Marquis Bailey finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60m hurdles finals after qualifying first and fifth, respectively. Faison posted a season-best time of 8.23 in the preliminaries before completing the finals with a time of 8.26. Bailey ran his best time in the finals stopping the clock at 8.28.

Redshirt freshman Thor Smith led a trio of Catamounts in the men's pole vault. Smith finished sixth with a height of 4.70m (15-05.00). Junior Dustin Tripplett cleared 4.55m (14-11.00) to finish eighth and freshman Corey Ginley came in tied for ninth with a vault of 4.55m (14-11.00). Tripplett earned the eighth spot by clearing the bar in fewer attempts.

A week after earning the Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week, senior Michaela Birek posted a sixth-place finish in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.60m (18-04.50). Two-time winner of the award this season, Chenell Bryan finished seventh with a distance of 5.57m (18-03.00).

Junior Michael Cornwell posted a season-best time of 4:15.98 in the men's one mile after finishing seventh. Kiedy also came up with a season-best in the men's 200m as he finished seventh with a time of 21.98.

Freshman Jaquell Bryant and junior Christian Carswell each earned top-10 finishes in the men's high jump. Bryant posted a height of 1.95m (6-04.75) which earned him seventh overall while Carswell came in ninth with a leap of 1.90m (6-02.75).

Junior Korie Bennett tied for seventh in the women's pole vault after clearing 3.50m (11-05.75).

Junior David Johnson and Hires came in sixth and ninth, respectively, in the men's triple jump. Johnson was able to post a distance of 14.41m (47-03.50) while Hires leapt 14.18m (46-06.25).

The women's 4x400m relay team posted a season-best time of 3:45.62 as they finished second overall. The Catamount's "B" squad came in ninth with a time of 3:54.24.

The Catamounts will be back in action Feb. 27-28 at the 2015 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

 

The Citadel Competes at the High Point Challenge on Friday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Citadel track and field team brought home two championships and shook up the Bulldog top 10 list at the High Point Challenge on Thursday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tanisha Bethel continued her impressive indoor season with a first place finish in the 60 meters. Bethel clocked in with a season-best time of 7.93. Bethel also earned sixth place in the 200 meters with a time of 26.19.

Bethel capped off the meet by leading the 4x400 relay team of Sarah Johnson, Emani Little and Mariana Garcia-Torres to a third place finish with a time of 3:59.99. The group now stands at No. 5 in the record books. Little also ran her personal best in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:22.13 to move to No. 4 in school history.

Taylor Viana recorded her career-best mark in the 60 meter hurdles and placed eighth with a time of 10.11. This time moves her to No. 7 in Citadel history.

In distance events, Caillian Colquitt ran her personal-best time in the 3k, clocking in at 11:07.54 to move to sixth place in the record books. Grace Jenkins etched her name at No. 10 in Citadel history in the same event with a time of 11:23.01.

Jackie Thompson posted her personal-best mile time of 5:24.06 to move to No. 4 in school history while Nicole Ogilbee also ran her career-best time of 5:32.03 to move to No. 10.

In field events, Kaitlyn Moore threw her personal-best in the shot put with a heave of 38'0.25" to finish in fifth place and earn the No. 5 spot all-time.

Asyria Daniels took eighth place with a career-best leap of 16'3.25" in the long jump and moved to No. 4 in Citadel history and Savannah Emmrich posted her season-best jump of 10'6" to take fifth place.

On the men's side, the 4x400 relay team of Devin Singleton, Darrell Hayden, Garrett Graham and Tevin Williams took home the crown with a season-best time of 3:22.50. Williams also ran his personal best in the 60 meters with a time of 7.12 to take third place.

Keith Cummings ran the 60 in 7.20 to finish in sixth while Singleton finished in seventh with a mark of 7.25 and Ashby Welsh placed eighth with a time of 7.33. Singleton also finished in third place in the 200 meters with a mark of 22.94.

Williams finished in seventh in the 200 with a time of 23.18 and Graham placed eighth with a mark of 22.53

Malik Diggs recorded his personal-record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.61 to take fourth place and move into No. 4 in Citadel history.

Cameron Scott ran his career-best time in the same event, clocking in at 9.21 to place seventh.

Michael Lantz led the pack in the distance events with a career-best mark of 8:52.17 in the 3,000 meters to finish in eighth place and move to No. 8 all time.

In field events, Tony Cuccaro earned fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 20'2.5" while Leo Grucella placed seventh with a personal-best mark of 19'3.25".

Derrick Freeland threw his personal-best in the shot put with a toss of 45'2.5" to take fourth place.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Feb. 21 as they send a group of athletes to the Tar Heel Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., and second group to Columbia, S.C., for the USC Open.

 

Women's Track Competes in the 2015 Liberty Quad

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The UNCG women’s track team traveled to Lynchburg, VA to compete in the 2015 Liberty Quad Meet on Friday Feb. 13.

In the 800-meter run, Katherine Link finished with a final time of 2:21.25 for fourth place overall. Eira Jensen finished in 10th place with a time of 2:26.46. Haley Wenos and Katlyn Ayers finished back to back with final times of 2:33.65 and 2.54.43, respectively. Meredith Hicks finished the race in 2:54.43.

In the 60-meter dash, Tiana Green finished with a final time of 8.22 and in the 200-meter dash, Green finished with a time of 27.40

The Spartans will have a weekend off before heading to Birmingham, AL for the Southern Conference Championship. The meet will kick off on Friday Feb. 27 and wrap up on Feb. 28 at the Birmingham CrossPlex Facility in Birmingham.

 

Men Place 2nd; Women 7th At Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University track and field teams competed in the Samford Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Sidney Jordan was the most successful Bulldogs on the night after he posted a first place finish in the men's shot put with a personal best mark of 16.59m and third place finish in the men's weight throw with a toss of 18.32m which also qualified as a personal best. Jordan finished with a total of 16 points on the day.

A trio of Bulldogs tallied second place finishes in the meet with Brandon Hazouri (1:49.70) in the men's 800 meters, Keyth Fightmaster (2.10m) in the men's high jump and Tray Oates (5.10m) in the men's pole vault.

Arsène Guillorel improved his time in the men's mile by 10 seconds with a personal best time of 4:08.44 to come in for a third place finish while Javion Lee also tallied a third place finish with a personal best leap of 7.18m

The Samford women ended the night with a seventh place finish amongst the field of 14 teams with a total of 29 total points.

Senior Marie Demedicis posted the highest mark of the night for the Bulldog women with a second place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.18. Freshman Karisa Nelson (2:13.23), senior Anna Laura Irvine (2:13.86) and sophomore Ansley Bos (2:14.20) followed up with sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes to score a combined 14 points in the event.

A pair of Bulldogs finished with two third place finishes in the field events with Courtney Prengaman tallied a score of 1.60m in the high jump and Aerial Horton who posted a mark of 17.16m in the women's weight throw.

The Bulldogs will take a week off before they return to action on Feb. 27-28, for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships that will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

 

Stuart, Gilpin Place Second, Third at Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Tennessee at Chattanooga distance runners sophomore Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) and senior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) finished second and third respectively in the men’s 3000 meter race at the Samford Invitational Friday evening.

Stuart was second in the distance event with a time of 8:33.16 less than one second off the top pace set by Liberty’s Titus Koech. Gilpin placed third with a time of 8:34.46. The pair combined for 14 points for the Mocs.

In the men’s 200 meter, freshman Jacob Noorbergen had a good showing with an eighth place finish and ran a season-best time of 22.08.

In the men’s 800 meter run, despite getting knocked around and bumped off the track, ran a PR 1:53.43, placing 12th.

In the women’s 3000 meter run, freshman Emily Drouin ran a season-best time of 10:11.76. Senior Keeley Stewart finished with a time of 10:28.20 in the event. Both qualified for the fast heat in the upcoming Southern Conference championships at the end of the month.

She bested her previous top time by more than five seconds at 5:04.80, placing 10th in the race. She was followed by freshman Anna Kate Chance with a time of 5:19.48 in the mile.

Senior Amanda Cotter finished 10th in the 800 meter with a time of 2:14.87 as she prepares for the conference championships. Freshman Maddison Melchionna was just a few spots and less than two seconds behind with a time of 2:16.08. Jessica York, Hannah Chamblin and Helenka Kis also recorded PRs in the race.

The SoCon Championships will be held Feb. 27-28 at the Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., and hosted by Samford.

 

Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Four members of VMI's men's track and field program wrapped up action in the heptathlon Saturday, as action concluded at the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg, Va.

Quincy Murphy led the way for the Keydets by finishing seventh overall with 4171 points, but he posted that total without running the day's final event, the 1,000-meters. His day was headlined by running the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles, an 8.42.

The day's other top result for the Keydets was in the 1,000-meters, where Ben Greene posted the second-best time at 2:51.05. Greene led the other Keydets in the heptathlon with 3,874 points and an eighth-place finish, ahead of Tyler Robinson (3,852, ninth) and Killian Carey (3,052, 12th).

VMI track and field returns to action Feb. 21, as the Keydets take part in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
