Furman’s Totland second at Florida State Match-Up, Paladins move up to fourth
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Taylor Totland (-1) is in second place after firing a 2-under 70 to help the 26th-ranked Furman women’s golf team move into fourth place Saturday at the third annual Florida State Match-Up Tournament at the par-72, 6,236 yard Southwood Golf Course.
The Paladins (+19) tied with 17th-ranked Virginia (+18) for the best round of the day, carding a 294 to move up five spots in the team standings. Second-ranked South Carolina (+15) leads No. 38 Florida State (+18) and Virginia by three strokes heading into the tournament’s final round.
Totland, a native of Tinton Falls, N.J., birdied two holes on the front to make the turn at 2-under then birdied two out of three holes from Nos. 10 through 12 to finish the day two strokes behind Bianca Fabrizio of Texas A&M, who carded a 72 for a two-day total of 141.
Freshman Alice Chen (+4) birdied No. 3 to shoot 1-under on the front nine then birdied No. 16 to card a 75 in the second round, tying for 14th place. Junior Valentina Romero (+8) enters Sunday’s final round tied for 27th after birdieing three holes on Saturday, and freshman Jacqueline Bendrick (+10) is tied for 33rd after shooting a 76 in the second round. Rookie Reona Hirai (+11) birdied No. 3 and No. 5 on Saturday, finishing in a tie for 44th after carding a 78.
The Paladins tee off of No. 1 at 9:10 a.m. Sunday in the final round of the 54-hole tournament, which features four teams ranked in the top 25 and seven teams among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings.
ETSU 10th at FSU Match-Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Rachel Pollock and redshirt freshman Dominika Czudkova both posted team-best rounds of 4-over-par 76, as the ETSU women’s golf team held its position following second-round play in the Florida State Match-Up on Saturday at the Southwood Golf Course.
The Bucs, who are facing a field that includes No. 2 South Carolina, No. 9 Mississippi State, No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 17 Virginia, No. 26 Furman, No. 38 Florida State and No. 42 Coastal Carolina, are still 10th on the team leaderboard following two days of play. Sophomore Linda Dobele is currently the top ETSU individual and finds herself tied for 35th after a round of 6-over 78 on Saturday.
ETSU improved its team score by two strokes compared to Friday’s first round.
On the tournament leaderboard, South Carolina finished the day at 591 and leads host Florida State and Virginia by three strokes in the team competition. Individually, Texas A&M’s Bianca Fabrizio continues to lead the event with a score of 3-under-par 141 and holds a two-stroke lead over Furman’s Taylor Totland.
Other ETSU results included a 5-over-par 77 from freshman Allyson Dunn, who finished tied for 51st along with junior Vivienne Chin, Czudkova and Pollock.
Play at the FSU Match-Up will conclude Sunday with third- and final-round action.
