Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel runner Jackie Thompson has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week with Western Carolina’s  Michaela Birek being named the Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. VMI’s Avery Martin has been named the Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week while teammate Quincy Murphy was picked as the Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Thompson placed second in a field of 55 runners at the ETSU Invitational last weekend. The senior ran a school-record 18:19.84 in her first 5k event of the season. The time eclipsed the school record by 16 seconds and ranks seventh in the SoCon rankings this season.

Birek recorded a SoCon-leading mark of 3,545 points in the pentathlon at the ETSU Invitational last weekend. The senior from Raleigh, N.C. broke the previous Western Carolina record of 3,515.

Martin won the 800-meter event at the Youngstown Invitational last weekend with a time of 1:52.60. The time ranks second in the SoCon this season, fourth in VMI school history and is also an IC4A qualifying time. The junior from Richmond, Va. also won the 1000-meters with a time of 2:28.09, which is an IC4A qualifying time and is second in school history.

Quincy won the heptathlon at the Youngstown Invitational last weekend with 5,074 points. The total by the junior from Arrington, Va. is currently ranked first in the SoCon and third in school history.
