SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI heavyweight Juan Adams has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Feb. 4-10. The selection is made by the league office.

Adams went 4-0 on the week, picking up a SoCon win and the heavyweight title at the All-Academy Championships in Kings Point, N.Y. He had two pins.

The redshirt senior from Houston, Texas, started his week with a pin of The Citadel’s Joe Bexley in 3:48 in Thursday’s home dual. He then went 3-0 at the All-Academy Championships on Saturday, starting with a fall over Frankie Girolamo of Norwich in 3:58. Adams followed that up with a shutout of Army’s Stephen Snyder, winning 7-0, before topping Marcus Malecek of Air Force 6-3 in the final.

Adams improved to 20-10 on the season.

The weekly award is the first of his career and second for a VMI wrestler this season, as teammate Dalton Henderson was honored on Nov. 12, giving the Keydets multiple winners in a season for the first time 2009-10.

Also nominated: Tyler Buckiso (The Citadel), Anthony Elias (Davidson), Karsten Van Velsor (SIUE) and McCoy Newberg (Chattanooga).
