The Citadel?s Haas named Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Marshall Haas has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Dec. 16-22. The selection is made by the league office.

Haas went 5-0 on the week, including a 4-0 mark to win the 197-pound title at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev.

The senior from South Riding, Va., opened his week with a 5-1 win over Matthew Rudy in the Bulldogs’ 28-10 win over Limestone on Friday.

Haas then won his bracket in Reno on Sunday, starting with a pin of Cal Poly’s JT Goodwin in just 1:15 to avenge a loss to Goodwin at the Cliff Keen Invitational earlier in the month.

Haas followed with a 6-1 win over Clackamas’ John Morin, the No. 5 seed, before earning a big 10-0 major decision over 14th-ranked and top-seeded Anthony Abro of Eastern Michigan in the semifinals. Haas topped Illinois’ Andre Lee 4-2 in the title bout to become just the second Citadel wrestler to ever claim a crown at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

With his big week, Haas jumped into the national rankings for the first time in his career, entering at No. 19 in the FloWrestling rankings.

The Citadel (3-0, 1-0 SoCon) returns to action at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1-2.

Also nominated: Denzel Dejournette (Appalachian State), Nathan Kraisser (Campbell) and Michael Pongracz (Chattanooga).
