Chattanooga competes at Hokie Open
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team had a strong showing at the Hokie Open on Sunday. Junior Bryce Carr wrestled unattached and won the 174 bracket, while three others placed in the Open Draw.
Carr, a junior-college national champion who is in his first season with the Mocs, is a potential redshirt candidate at 174 behind returning Southern Conference champion Sean Mappes. The two met in Sunday's semifinals, with Carr posting a 5-2 decision. Carr then beat Columbia's Zach Hernandez 5-3 in the finals.
Mappes also had a strong showing, bouncing back to place third overall. He defeated North Carolina's John Staudenmeyer 10-5 in the third-place match.
Junior Scottie Boykin placed second at 197. Boykin, ranked 14th in the nation this week, lost in the finals to Duke's No. 3 Connor Hartmann 10-2.
Senior John Lampe was third at 184. He lost to UNC's Alex Utley in the semifinals (3-2), but pinned Stanford's Ryan Davies (5:58) in the third-place match. It was one of three pins on the day for Lampe.
UTC also had a ton of success in the freshman/sophomore brackets with 10 placing in the top six. UTC had both finalists at 165 in freshmen Dominic Lampe and Demarco Gatti. Lampe won that showdown 4-2.
Justin Lampe won the 174 bracket, while Alonzo Allen won 125. Freshmen Roman Boylen (141) and Rodney Jones (197) both placed second in their weight classes, while freshmen Chris Debien (133) and Sam Stephenson (285) where third. Freshmen Toribio Navarro (125) and Chad Solomon (174) each finished sixth.
The Mocs are back home next weekend, hosting Cumberland and Southeastern in Maclellan Gym. Action begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
VMI competes at Hokie Open
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Seven Virginia Military Institute wrestlers placed in the top six of their respective weight divisions at the Hokie Open on Sunday at Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House.
Freshman Neal Richards led the way for the Keydets by placing second overall in the 157-pound weight class, while freshman Stevan Smith had the team’s second-best showing with a third-place finish in the 149-pound class.
Junior Shabaka Johns (165) and Taylor Thomas (184) both placed fourth in their classes, while freshmen Bennie Pachello (133), Darren Ostrander (141) and Blake Hohman (157) took sixth overall.
VMI returns to action next Sunday, Nov. 15, with a 1 p.m. dual at home against Franklin & Marshall. The match will take place at the newly renovated wrestling facility housed in Cormack Hall on post.
Campbell goes 0-3 at Mountaineer Duals
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Campbell fell in all three duals at the Mountaineer Quads on Sunday. The team finished 14-26 against No. 21/23 West Virginia, 15-21 against Drexel and 6-29 against Arizona State at the quad meet. Nathan Kraisser went a perfect 3-0 against his opponents, while Tyler Walker and Paul Duggan both went 2-1 in their bouts.
Campbell faced Arizona State to start off the daylong event. Beginning with the 125 weight class, Tyler Walker squared up against Ares Carpio and earned the first points of the bout with a takedown. The two grapplers were tied 4-4 at the end of the first period, but Walker kicked it into gear and beat out Carpio in a 16-11 decision to earn the first team points for the Camels. No. 19 Kraisser went up against Dalton Brady in the 133-pound bout. Kraisser and Brady were close throughout the match, but the Camel came out on top with a 5-4 decision. ASU took control of the dual after the first two bouts, winning out the remaining eight weight classes with five decisions, two major decisions and a fall and a final score of 29-6.
The Camels faced the Mountaineers in their second dual of the day. Kraisser, Quentin Perez, Paul Duggan and Ville Heino all picked up wins in their weight classes. Kraisser faced Cory Stainbrook at 133 pounds and defeated the Mountaineer in a major decision (15-6) for four team points to tie the score at 4. Perez earned the second team win as he toppled Jake S. Smith, also by a major decision (14-3), in the 149 weight class. Duggan won the 165 weight class by a 5-2 decision over Timothy Wheeling to put the team score 15-11 in favor of WVU. Heino picked up the last win for the Orange and Black as he took down Jakob Scheffel in a 3-1 decision at 184 pounds.
Drexel was the last team Campbell would face while at the Mountaineer Duals. Four Camels earned individual wins over the Dragons, including Tyler Walker, Kraisser, Duggan and Jere Heino. Walker picked up his second win of the day as he recorded an 11-2 major decision over Zachary Fuentes in the 125 weight class. Kraisser took on Franco Ferraina in the 133-pound bout. He earned five team points as he beat Ferraina in a 24-3 tech fall, putting the team score 9-0 in favor of the Camels. Drexel's grapplers earned three consecutive decisions in the 141, 149, and 157 weight classes, heading into the 165 bout with the score tied at 9.
Duggan earned his second win of the day as he defeated Austin Rose in a 5-2 decision to give the Camels the 12-9 lead. The Dragons went on another run, winning the 174, 184, and 197 weight classes with three major decisions to jump out to a 21-12 lead. With the heavyweight bout remaining, Jere Heino squared up against Alexander Foley to close the day. Heino went out and earned an 8-2 decision for three team points, but the Camels fell just short, finishing with 15 points to Drexel's 21.
The Camels return to the mat on Saturday, Nov. 14, as they host American University at Carter Gym. The match will be the second of six home duals for Campbell and is slated to start at 12 p.m.
