The Citadel 21, VMI 14
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team kicked off its 2015-16 season on Saturday morning with a 21-14 win over Southern Conference foe VMI.
The Bulldogs fell down early after the first two matches as Caleb Smith (6-2) and Andrew Clayton (0-3) lost by decision and major decision, respectively. VMI would hold a 7-0 lead heading into the 141-pound match.
Ty Buckiso (1-0) got things started for The Citadel in the 141-pound weight class behind four takedowns and secured a 10-4 decision to make the score 7-3, still in favor of the Keydets. Buckiso’s win was the first of three in a row for the Bulldogs.
Matt Frisch (1-0) earned a tough 4-3 decision over VMI’s Emmitt Kelly after a takedown and two escapes to narrow the Bulldogs’ deficit to 7-6. No. 14 Aaron Walker (1-0) grabbed the next win for the Bulldogs in an 11-6 decision over Neal Richards to give The Citadel its first lead of the match 9-7.
The Keydets regained the lead after winning the next two matches. William Connell (1-3) fell in a major decision at 165 pounds and Timothy Knipl (5-1) lost in a 3-1 decision in the 174-pound match. The two wins would give VMI a 14-9 lead with three weight classes remaining.
The Citadel would sweep the remaining three matches by major decisionm beginning with freshman Sawyer Root, who won by a 12-4 major decision. Root (6-0) tallied three takedowns and two escapes in the win over Derek Thurman.
Marshall Haas (1-0) also took the win in the 197-pound match, recording four takedowns in the 11-3 winning effort. Joe Bexley finished things out for the Bulldogs with a 14-0 major decision over Tasi Mathias to give The Citadel the 21-14 victory.
With the win, the Bulldogs earn their first win of the year overall as well as in the SoCon. The Citadel returns to the mat on Wednesday when it takes on Anderson University at 6 p.m.
The Keydets return to action quickly as the majority of the team will compete at the Hokie Open all day Sunday hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

No. 24 Stanford 19, Chattanooga 16
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a tight 19-16 match to No. 24 Stanford on Saturday. Bonus points were the difference as the two teams split the 10 bouts.
The highlight win for the Mocs was No. 20 Jared Johnson's 4-2 decision over No 13 Nathan Butler at heavyweight. Johnson used an escape and takedown in the second period, plus riding time, to open the year with a big result.
The first match was indicative of the whole day, a one-point win for Stanford. Freshman Alonzo Allen scored an early takedown to give UTC a quick lead. He kept a 3-1 advantage going into the third period, but Brian Rossi posted an escape and a takedown for the victory.
Freshman Chris Debien was the second of five first-timers on the mat for the Mocs. He scored an 8-3 decision over Mason Pengilly at 133.
After a four-point win by the Cardinal at 141, junior Michael Pongracz moved up a weight to take on Tommy Pawleski. Pongracz escaped late to tie the match a 2-2 and send it to overtime. He then took down Pawleski just before the horn in the first sudden-victory period.
Leading 7-6 after four matches, Stanford ran off four straight wins to nearly put it out of reach at 19-6. The Mocs tried to mount a comeback, beginning with senior John Lampe's major decision at 184.
No. 14 Scottie Boykin gave the Mocs a chance with his decision at 197. That left Johnson needing a pin to force a tie on the scoreboard. Johnson did not get the fall, but he was impressive in his win.
The Mocs don't have any time to dwell on the loss, as both teams load the bus and head to the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Va. The one-day tournament starts Sunday morning at Virginia Tech's Rector Fieldhouse.
The next home matches are Saturday, Nov. 14, against Cumberland and Southeastern, beginning at 10 a.m. in Maclellan Gym.

Appalachian State wins three at Mountaineer Duals
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State won all three of its matches at the Mountaineer Duals on Saturday in Varsity Gym. The Mountaineers (3-0) outscored their opponents, 119-15, on the day.
App State wrestlers won all their matches over the first two contests against Anderson and Davidson, winning 51-0 and 49-0, respectively. Matt Zovistoski, Nick Kee, Michael Longo and David Peters-Logue all had pins in the first two matches, while Denzel Dejournette had pins in both matches.
Cal State Bakersfield also won both of its matches entering the third and final match against Appalachian. The schools traded decision wins at 125 pounds and 133 pounds. Longo gave App State the lead with a 6-2 decision win over Ian Nickell.
A technical fall CSU Bakersfield’s Coleman Hammond over Zovistoski pushed the Roadrunners back in front, 8-6. Peters-Logue earned his third win of the day to give Appalachian a 9-8 advantage.
No. 13 Adam Fierro needed a takedown as time expired to edge App’s Forrest Przybysz in the 165-pound match. Kee defeated former All-American Bryce Hammond in a 6-3 decision to put the Apps back in the lead.
After trading wins at 184 pound and 197 pounds, the match was tied, 15-15, going into the heavyweight bout. Dejournette dominated Matt Williams, winning by major decision, 14-1, to seal the Appalachian victory.
The Mountaineers are back in action next Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.

Gardner-Webb splits at Mountaineer Duals
BOONE, N.C. – Hunter Gamble, Tyler Ziegler and Boyce Cornwell picked up two wins apiece Saturday, as Gardner-Webb opened the season with a 50-0 win over Anderson (S.C.) and a 26-11 loss to CSU Bakersfield.
Gardner-Webb (1-1) fell behind early vs. CSU Bakersfield in the morning lid-lifter, with the Roadrunners rattling off five consecutive wins after Ziegler captured a 2-1 decision over Carlos Herrera to tie the match at 3-3.
Gamble broke the string with a dominant performance, recording an 18-2 tech fall win over Dylan Bollinger to trim the Runners’ lead to 21-8. Cornwell’s 6-4 decision at 285 pounds provided the final margin.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs had no trouble in the nightcap, whipping Anderson in shutout fashion.
GWU received wins at 125 pounds, 144 pounds and 197 pounds via forfeit and saw Ziegler record a 17-1 tech fall win at 133 pounds for a big early lead. Ryan Mosley bounced back from a morning defeat with a tech-fall win (18-3) at 149 pounds and was followed by a tech-fall win at 157 pounds from Kyle Ash (18-2).
Brett Stein recorded a 14-4 major decision at 174 pounds, followed by a 17-7 major decision from Gamble at 184 pounds to push the lead to 38-0. Cornwell finished with a pin of Ty Williams at 285 pounds (1:32) to complete the rout.
Gardner-Webb will take a 14-day break before traveling to face North Carolina on Nov. 21 in Chapel Hill, N.C.. That match is set for a 7 p.m. start.

SIUE nabs three titles at Grand View Open
DES MOINES, Iowa – SIUE wrestlers claimed three titles at the season-opening Grand View Open on Saturday.
Newcomer John Fahy won the open 149-pound weight class. Jake Tindle was victorious in the 197-pound open weight class and Jake Residori, competing as an unattached wrestler, captured the 174-pound weight class in the open division.
Nine SIUE wrestlers in total finished among the top six in the open division. Three Cougars were place-winners in the freshman division.
Fahy used a pin and two technical falls en route to the finals. He won the title by injury default when William Penn's Scottie Bonds was unable to wrestle.
Tindle picked up back-to-back pins at 197 and won the title with a 4-3 win over unattached Matthew Hurford.
Residori, who has won more than 20 matches in each of the last three seasons for the Cougars, won his weight class with a 14-3 major decision over North Dakota State's Tyler Harrington.
Derek Nagel (184) and Chris Johnson (HWT) advanced to the finals in their respective weight classes and finished second overall. Troy Gassaway placed second in the freshman division 125-pound weight class.
