App State alum to present $25K donation to wrestling team

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University wrestling alumnus and Hall of Famer Wayne C. York will present an extremely generous donation to the wrestling program before its home match against NC State on Friday night in Varsity Gym.

York has a passion for App State wrestling and plans to present a check for $25,242 in support of the wrestling program and wrestling student-athletes.

“We are extremely grateful for Mr. York’s generous gift,” said head coach JohnMark Bentley. “We have a great tradition and we are thankful that we have alumni willing to give back to the program.”

York wrestled for Appalachian State from 1949-51 and graduated with a degree in physical education. York was inducted into the Appalachian State University Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 20, 1997, in recognition of his outstanding collegiate career. York was a member of the undefeated 1950 squad that went 13-0 and set a new national scoring record with 368 points.

“We are so thankful to have the support of alumni like Mr. York to inspire our student-athletes to strive to be their best,” said senior associate athletic director Brian Tracy. “His generosity is greatly appreciated by our athletic administration, coaches, student-athletes and Mountaineer faithful.”

After the presentation of the check, the Mountaineers will square off against the NC State Wolfpack. The match is set to start 6:30 p.m.
