SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State heavyweight Denzel Dejournette has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 18-24, winning the honor for the second consecutive week. The selection is made by the league office.
Dejournette went 4-0 to win the heavyweight title at the Keystone Classic on Sunday, a week after taking the same crown at the Michigan State Open. The redshirt junior, who is 11-0 on the season and ranked No. 12 nationally, has won five of his last seven tournaments dating back to last season, including the 2015 Arby’s SoCon Wrestling Championship.
On Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa., Dejournette opened defense of his 2014 Keystone Classic title with a 16-3 major decision over Sacred Heart’s Ray Sherwood. He followed that up with a 16-1 technical fall over Drexel’s Alexander Foley before pinning Rider’s Mauro Correnti in 4:47 in the semifinals of the bracket. Dejournette then picked up an 8-2 win over No. 19 Ryan Solomon to claim his second straight title in the tournament.
The weekly award is the fourth of Dejournette’s career. With consecutive honors, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native has claimed back-to-back weekly awards in the third and fourth weeks of the season in each of the last two years, as he also claimed the award on Nov. 19 and Nov. 26, 2014.
Appalachian State (3-0, 1-0 SoCon) returns to action at North Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Also nominated: Paul Duggan (Campbell), Ty Buckiso (The Citadel), Kamaal Shakur (Chattanooga) and Stevan Smith (VMI).
