Five SIUE wrestlers place at Joe Parisi Open Presented By MSW Marketing

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Five SIUE wrestlers finished among the top five in their respective weight classes Saturday at the Joe Parisi Open Presented By MSW Marketing.

John Fahy (149), Derek Nagel (184) and Cameron Kelly (141) each placed second. Jake Residori, wrestling unattached, placed fourth at 174 pounds. Nate Higgins, fresh off a major decision Friday night against Missouri, took fifth.

Fahy marched to the finals only to be defeated for a second straight day by Missouri's Lavion Mayes. Nagel lost to West Virginia's Jacob Scheffel in the final match. Kelly recorded two pins en route to his finals match. Residori's final match was a 3-2 nailbiter against Northeast Oklahoma's Jacobe Smith. Higgins lost one match in overtime and then earned fifth with a medical forfeit.

The Cougars are now idle until Dec. 5, when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on Indiana University.

 

Four Campbell wrestlers place at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Campbell sent 13 wrestlers to the 38th Annual Navy Classic, where the Camels had four grapplers place. No. 20 Nathan Kraisser (133 pounds), Luke Stewart (141 pounds) and Paul Duggan (165 pounds) all finished fourth, while Ville Heino finished fifth at 184 pounds. Princeton finished first with 139.0 team points to claim the team victory, while Campbell finished ninth with 58.5 team points.

Kraisser finished the day 3-2 wrestling in the 133-pound weight class and placed fourth overall. Kraisser got off to a rocky start, dropping his opening match to Vince Rodriguez (George Mason) in a 4-2 decision. Moving to the consolation bracket, he received a bye before earning three consecutive decisions. Kraisser defeated Cameron Kelly (Ohio) 11-8, Zachary Davis (U.S. Naval Academy) 5-4, and Ezekiel Salvo (Brown) 8-1.

Kraisser reached the third place match where he faced Anthony Tutolo of Kent State. Tutolo won the third-place title after pinning Kraisser in a quick 26 seconds and knocked the Camel out of podium contention for a fourth-place finish.

Stewart started off strong as he cruised to a 16-0 tech fall over Ryan Renkey from GMU. Stewart lost in the quarterfinal bout to Chance Driscoll of Kent State in a decision (6-3). He moved to the consolation round and pinned his first opponent, John Kenyon from Navy, in 4:43. Stewart followed with a 13-2 major decision over Jordan Reich (Princeton).

Stewart downed Luke Rowh from Wisconsin in the consolation semifinal bout in a 6-3 decision and moved to the third-place match, where he fell to Tejon Anthony (GMU) by one point in a 5-4 decision. He finished fourth in the 141-pound weight class and earned 14 team points for the Camels.

Duggan also claimed a fourth-place finish as well as 12.50 team points, going 3-2 on the day. After a first-round bye, Duggan recorded his second fall of the season by pinning Rob Schlitt from Bucknell in 6:35. He won the quarterfinal match against Arsen Ashughyan (Ohio) in an 8-5 decision to advance to the semifinals.

Duggan faced Jordan from Wisconsin in the 165-pound semifinal bout, who defeated the Camel in a 6-2 decision. Continuing to the consolation bouts, Duggan won in the consolation semis, taking down Seth Liegel (Wisconsin) in a 6-2 decision, before falling to NCAA qualifier Tyler Buckwalter (Kent State) in a sudden-victory decision 7-5 and earning a fourth-place title.

Wrestling at 184 pounds, Heino was the fourth Camel to earn a top-five finish. Heino went 4-2 on the day, earning his first win in a 16-0 tech fall over Princeton's Grayson Shepperd. He followed that with a 5-3 decision over Andrew Romanchik (Ohio) and a 10-7 decision over Navy's Daniel Bannister. Heino moved to the semifinal bout but fell to Tom Sleigh of Bucknell in a 7-2 decision. Cole Baxter of Kent State took down the Camel in the consolation semifinal in a 15-0 tech fall.

Heino finished on a high note as he won the fifth-place match by recorded an 18-1 tech fall over Jake Stilling from Wisconsin. Heino finished with 12.00 team points as the last placer for the Camels.

The Camels return to the mat on Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Wolfpack Open at NC State in Raleigh, N.C.

 

No. 19 North Carolina tops Gardner-Webb

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb wrestling team dropped a 25-12 decision to No. 19 North Carolina (3-1, 0-0 ACC) on Saturday evening at Chapel Hill High School.

Saturday's dual meet was the first of two events for the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-2, 0-0 SoCon) this weekend, as they compete in the Wolfpack Open at NC State on Sunday.

Cortez Starkes got GWU off to a quick start in the first match of the evening at 125 pounds, picking up a 10-4 decision over Anthony Bosco.

Tyler Ziegler gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their second win of the night, defeating Austin Headlee at the 133-pound weight class. Ziegler and Headlee were locked in a 4-4 tie and needed an extra period to decide the match. In the overtime period, Ziegler scored a point and recorded an extra point for riding time to earn the victory.

Evan Henderson tied the match at 6, as he pinned Ryan Hull at the 2:00 mark of the first half, but Ryan Mosley responded for the Dogs with a close 4-3 decision at 149 to put Gardner-Webb back on top, 9-6.

North Carolina would roll off five straight victories to cement the victory, but Boyce Cornwell defeated Cory Gilliland-Daniel 6-1 at heavyweight in the final match of the night.
