Chattanooga’s Boykin wins at NWCA All-Star Classic
ATLANTA – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Scottie Boykin won his match at the 50th Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday. Boykin was one of two Mocs competing on the under-card at the event at Georgia Tech.
Boykin, a two-time All-Southern Conference honoree and 2015 NCAA qualifier, took on Army senior Bryce Barnes. Both are currently ranked at 197, with Boykin listed at No. 15 and Barnes at No. 18. Boykin took the 15-10 decision in Sunday's action.
Also competing at the event was freshman Kamaal Shakur. He lost to NC State's Chad Pike 7-6. Shakur started strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after the first period. Pike scored the last five points in the bout to complete the comeback.
The Mocs open the 2015-16 season at home next weekend, hosting No. 24 Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 7. Action begins at 11 a.m. in Maclellan Gym.
Campbell opens season with loss to Grand Canyon
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell fell to Grand Canyon 21-16 in its season and home opener at Carter Gym on Sunday. Paul Duggan (165 lbs.), Ville Heino (184 lbs.), Jere Heino (HWT) and Nathan Kraisser (133 lbs.) each won his respective weight class in an exciting dual.
Duggan picked up the first team points for Campbell as he earned six for pinning Bobby Reece in 1:40. Duggan recorded the initial takedown early in the bout and earned four near fall points before pinning Reece to win the 165 weight class 6-0.
Ville Heino took on Cale Wilson from Grand Canyon in the 184-pound bout. Heino got the early takedown, but Wilson managed to escape for one point. Wilson chose down starting the second period and earned an escape point, but Heino managed to get a takedown for two more. Heino recorded three takedowns and an escape for seven total points and earned one stalling point from Wilson as he won the bout by a decision of 8-3 earning three more team points for the Camels.
The heavyweight match was the most thrilling of the afternoon going to tiebreaker rounds. Jere Heino and Danny Chaid went scoreless in the first period as Heino chose down to start the second. He earned two points for a reversal only to have Chaid escape. Heino got two more points for a takedown but Chaid again escape the Fin’s clutches heading into the third period with the score 4-2 in Campbell's favor. Chaid escaped after starting on the bottom and took down Heino for three points to take the lead, but Heino managed to escape just in time to tie the bout 5-5 heading to overtime. After going through three overtimes with each grappler earning just one point from escapes, the bout went to sudden victory. Heino had just enough strength left to take down Chaid and won by a decision of 8-6 (TB-1).
Kraisser took on Juaquin Olivas in the 133 weight class. Kraisser took control early, earning two takedowns over the first two periods for a 4-1 lead. Going into the third, Kraisser chose down and earned a quick escape point. He had two takedowns and gained one point for Olivas' stalling. Add one more point for his 3:37 of riding time and Kraisser claimed the 133-pound bout with a major decision of 11-3 for four team points.
Campbell heads to West Virginia next weekend to compete in the Mountaineer Quad as it will face Arizona State, Drexel and West Virginia on Nov. 7.

Davidson goes 1-2 at Maryland Duals
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Davidson wrestling team posted a 1-2 record at the Terrapins Dual to open the 2015-16 season Sunday afternoon.
After falling to Maryland and Buffalo, Davidson posted a 25-9 win over West Liberty to end the day on a high note.
Freshman Tony Palumbo earned the lone victory against Maryland. The rookie posted an 8-4 decision over Maryland's Patrick Gerish at 157 pounds. He went on to earn a hard-fought 3-2 win against West Liberty's David Schlieper.
In the final match of the day, Davidson won seven of the 10 bouts, including the final four weights to post a 25-9 win over West Liberty.
Sophomore Dustin Runzo got things rolling for Davidson at 133 pounds with an 8-4 decision over Johnathan Bodkin before the Wildcats had back-to-back victories at 149 and 157. Aidan Conroy first posted an 8-6 decision over Anthony Craig before Palumbo earned his second victory of the day.
West Liberty evened the score at 9 thanks to a win at 165, but Davidson rattled off four consecutive wins to secure the match.
At 174, Nathaniel Powers earned a 5-4 decision thanks to the riding-time point before Konner Pritchard claimed a 4-1 victory at 184 to put the Wildcats in front, 15-9. Sophomore Ryan Devlin posted a major decision at 197 and Will Cooley ended the match with a pin.
Davidson returns to action Nov. 7 with a dual at Appalachian State.

The Citadel completes action at The Citadel Open
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel Open came to a close on Sunday evening after a full day of competition featuring 250 wrestlers inside McAlister Field House.
Three unattached Bulldog wrestlers placed in the top three in their weight classes. Freshman Timothy Knipl took first place in the 174-pound weight class after taking the 3-1 decision in the championship match. Knipl finished the day 5-0. Fellow freshman Sawyer Root also went 5-0 and took first place in the 184-pound weight class, defeating Willie Bives in a 12-5 decision. Freshman Caleb Smith lost his first-round match but managed to win out the rest of his matches and finish in third place in the 125-pound division.
The Citadel will open with its first duel of the 2015 season on Saturday when it takes on SoCon rival VMI for the Bruegger's Bagels Wakeup Takedown Challenge. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. inside McAlister Field House.
