App's Dejournette named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State heavyweight Denzel Dejournette has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 11-17. The selection is made by the league office.

Dejournette went 4-0 to win the heavyweight title at the Michigan State Open on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich. The redshirt junior has won four of his last six tournaments dating back to last season.

The Winston-Salem, N.C., native rolled to a 10-0 major decision over Michigan State’s Dimitrus Renfroe in the quarterfinals before dropping Central Michigan’s Newton Smerchek for an 11-3 major to reach the title bout. There, Dejournette picked up a 7-3 win over Davenport’s Glenn Geurink to claim the heavyweight title in the open division.

The weekly award is the third of Dejournette’s career and comes nearly a year to the day after his first. He also claimed the award on Nov. 19 and Nov. 26 of last season.
