VMI tops Franklin & Marshall
LEXINGTON, Va. – Competing in its first ever match at The Pit at Cormack Hall, the VMI wrestling team earned a 27-9 victory over the visiting Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday afternoon.
The match was highlighted by freshman Neal Richards’ pin at 157 pounds and four victories by major decision to lift the Keydets to the team win.
Junior Dalton Henderson gave VMI a quick 4-0 lift following a major decision at 125 pounds over the Diplomats’ Edgar Garcia.
Franklin & Marshall rebounded with two consecutive wins at 133 and 141 pounds as F&M’s Scott Stevens took down Dominick Gallo by a 3-0 decision at 133 and Patrick Quinlan overcame VMI freshman John Reed Jr. by a 12-8 decision, providing a 6-4 F&M lead.
The lead was brief, however, as the Keydets rambled off six consecutive victories, starting with Emmitt Kelly’s 5-3 decision over F&M’s Jason Bing and Richards’ pin over Andy Francos in 1:57 in what turned out to be the match-winning bout.
No. 28-ranked Shabaka Johns of VMI defeated Gordon Bolig by a 9-0 major decision and Mark Darr achieved an 11-3 major over F&M’s Colin Gironda to give the Keydets a commanding 21-6 advantage.
Coming off losses in last weekend’s match at The Citadel, 184-pounder Derek Thurman and 197-pounder Urayoan Garcia registered dual victories with respective decisions by 7-2 and 6-4 scores. In the final match of the afternoon, VMI heavyweight Sivaatasi Mathias fell in a close 3-2 decision to the Diplomats’ Antonio Pelusi.
The Keydets have a week to prepare for the Keystone Classic next Sunday, Nov. 22. in Philadelphia, Pa. VMI will then return to dual action on Thursday, Dec. 3, for a home Southern Conference matchup with Gardner-Webb at 7:30 p.m. at Cormack Hall.

SIUE drops pair of duals
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The first two dual meets of the season left the SIUE wrestling on the short end as Arizona State defeated the Cougars 38-6 and ninth-ranked Illinois bested SIUE 41-3.
Freshman Troy Gassaway was the lone victor for the Cougars against Illinois with a 7-1 win at 125 pounds over Francis Edelen. Gassaway dropped his first match of the day against Arizona State's Ares Carpio 14-7.
Chris Johnson, at heavyweight, earned all six of SIUE's team points in the Arizona State match. He pulled out a pin over Tanner Hall at 7:37.
SIUE opens the home schedule this Friday at 7 p.m. CT against Missouri. The Tigers enter the match ranked No. 9 nationally in the USA Today/NWCA poll.

Appalachian State competes at Michigan State Open
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Appalachian State competed in its first tournament of the season on Sunday at the Michigan State Open. The Mountaineers placed six wrestlers in the top six of their weight classes.
The tournament featured two different brackets, a freshman and sophomore division and an open division.
App State had four wrestlers place in the open division. Denzel Dejournette won the heavyweight division. Forrest Przybysz took home third place at 165 pounds. Nick Kee placed fifth at 174 pounds, while David Peters-Logue placed sixth at 157 pounds.
Dejournette defeated Chuck Booby of Bucknell in his opening match and then recorded major decisions over Dimitrus Renfroe of Michigan State and Newton Smerchek of Central Michigan to advance to the final. Dejournette then won a 7-3 decision over Glenn Geurink of Davenport in the first-place match.
Przybysz used two decision victories over Wisconsin's Seth Liegel and Michigan State's Travis Curley to advance into the 165-pound semifinal. Przybysz then dropped a 14-9 decision to Michigan's Logan Massa. In the third-place match, Przybysz won by major decision over Rob Schlitt of Bucknell.
Kee won his first two matches by scores of 6-5 and 12-0, earning a spot in the quarterfinal. Kee lost an 8-2 decision to Ohio State's Myles Martin. Kee went on to win three matches in the wrestle-back bracket to place fifth.
Peters-Logue dropped his first match of the tournament to Joseph LaVellee of Missouri, 7-6. Peters-Logue won his next four matches by technical fall, two decisions and a major decision to get into the fifth-place match. Cam Tessari of Lindsey Wilson pinned Peters-Logue in the first period to claim fifth place.
In the freshman/sophomore division, Matt Zovistoski placed third and Angel Najar finished sixth at 157 pounds.
Zovistoski won his first three matches of the tournament by decision and advanced to the semifinal at 149 pounds. Zovistoski dropped the semifinal match to Navy's Casey Cowen. The freshman won a decision over Mark Bozzo of Michigan State in the third-place match.
Najar won by medical forfeit in the first round before pinning Hayden Cregg of Davenport to advance to the quarterfinal. Juwan Edmond of Notre Dame knocked Najar out of the championship bracket with a 12-5 decision. Najar won his first two consolation matches before dropping a close 3-1 decision to Luke Fortuna of Missouri in the fifth-place match.
The Mountaineers are back in action next Sunday for at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa.
