SPARTANBURG, S.C. – SIUE sophomore John Fahy has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 4-10. The selection is made by the league office.

Fahy went 5-0 at the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, winning the open 149-pound bracket.

The Cougar newcomer was dominant in his four contested matches, winning two by technical fall and one by fall. Fahy shut out Ottawa’s John Pacha 15-0 for his first tech fall then pinned Graceland’s Coulter Allen in 4:00. Fahy followed that with a 6-2 win over Illinois’ Tagen Lambotte. In the semifinals of the bracket, Fahy pitched another shutout, cruising to a 16-0 tech fall over Iowa State’s John Stetzel. Fahy claimed the title when William Penn’s Scottie Bonds took an injury default in the final.

The SoCon weekly award is the first in the career of the Pewee Valley, Ky., native, who is in his first year at SIUE after transferring from Illinois.

SIUE will see its first dual action of the season on Sunday when it takes on Arizona State and Illinois at the Illini Duals in Champaign, Ill.

Also nominated: Nick Kee (Appalachian State), Nathan Kraisser (Campbell), Sawyer Root (The Citadel), Boyce Cornwell (Gardner-Webb), Scottie Boykin (Chattanooga) and Shabaka Johns (VMI).
