Final two rounds Forest Oaks Fall Classic canceled

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Due to heavy rain and high winds, the final two rounds of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic have been canceled for Saturday and Sunday. The overnight rain and forecasted additional rain have forced the 54-hole tournament to be reduced to the 18 holes played Friday afternoon.

Winthrop has been declared the winner of the event after leading after 18 holes with a 16-over-par 296. Xavier is the runner-up. one shot back at 17-over-par 297. UNCG rounds out the top three after posting a 21-over-par 301 score, its lowest score this season. 

 

Mercer finishes seventh at Forest Oaks Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer University finished seventh at the rain-shortened Forest Oaks Fall Classic after the final two rounds were canceled. Freshman Terese Romeo shot a career-best 2-over 71 to lead the Bears and finish in a tie for second place.

Romeo, who played as an individual this tournament, had the best round of her young career. The Tampa, Fla., native carded a 2-under 34 on the back nine to carry her into a tie for second place and just two strokes out of the lead.

Mercer posted a score of 315 in the opening 18 holes of golf. The Bears are six strokes out of fifth place in an event that was won by Winthrop (296). Xavier (297) finished second.

Payton Schanen earned her first career top-10 finish and the third straight top-20 effort after carding three birdies on her way to eighth place with a 5-over 75.

Mary Augusta Janiga finished three strokes behind in a tie for 25th place.

The Bears' six players in action combined for seven birdies on the day, including a team-leading three from Schanen and two from Romeo.

Mercer returns to action Oct. 18-20 at the Fighting Camel Fall Classic in Buies Creek, N.C.

 

The Citadel finishes ninth at Forest Oaks Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Citadel women’s golf team finished in ninth place at the Forest Oaks Fall Classic on Saturday after play was called due to rain and wind.

Round two was set to start at 9 a.m. on Saturday but was pushed back multiple times due to rain and wind in the area. Tournament officials eventually canceled all remaining rounds due to unplayable conditions.

Eraina Manor finished tied for 25th after carding a 78 in the first round. Renata Sucha shot an 80, allowing her to finish tied for 31st. Fellow Bulldogs’ Marina Grimal recorded an 83 and Laura Simpson shot a 99.

The Bulldogs will return to action Oct. 18-20 when they travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for the Terrier Intercollegiate hosted by SoCon foe Wofford.
