Bulldogs finish rain-soaked Race
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite difficult weather conditions, The Citadel men’s and women’s cross country teams completed their respective races at the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Ross Jordan led the Bulldogs in the men’s 8k race, finishing in 26:24.81. The junior was the highest finisher for both squads, placing 13th overall. Michael Lantz (27:06.54) and Jamie Cunningham (28:06.14) were the next Bulldogs to cross the finish line, taking 24th and 39th respectively.
Grace Jenkins continued her hot streak for the women’s team, clocking a time of 20:10.70 in the 5k. The sophomore finished 39th out of 122 runners. Jessica DeWitte finished 55th with a time of 21:31.18 while Bethany Reeves (21:16.03) crossed the finish line just three seconds later.
The Citadel will return to action on Oct. 16 when they take part in the College of Charleston Classic. The race, which was originally supposed to take place at Trophy Lakes on Johns Island, has been moved to Mullet Hall, a course on the opposite end of Johns Island. The women’s race is set to begin at 4:45 p.m. followed by the men’s race at 5:15 p.m.
Henderson claims JSU Foothills title; Mocs teams place second
OXFORD, Ala. – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Teghan Henderson placed first at the JSU Foothills Cross Country Invitational and led the women’s cross country team to a second place finish while the men, paced by junior Paul Stuart, also finished second.
Henderson, with nearly a year out of competition due to injury, set a meet record with a time of 17:15.47 despite the rain that fell throughout.
Also running well was sophomore Emily Drouin, who placed third overall with a PR time of 17:44.53 over the 5-kilometer course.
The women placed all seven runners in the top 20 and were second behind Auburn with 36 points. The Tigers finished all five scoring runners in the Top 10 with 25 points. Georgia State was third with 116 points, Lipscomb finished fourth (135) while former Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern was fifth with 144 points and current SoCon member Mercer was sixth with 147 points.
Stuart led the men to a second place finish behind Auburn with 84 points. He placed fifth overall with a PR time of 25:19.81 over the 8K course. Chattanooga finished ahead of Troy (95 points), Lipscomb (97) and fellow Southern Conference member Mercer who was fifth overall with 101 points.
Chattanooga will host the annual Front Runner Invitational in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.
Keydet men finish second, women third at George Mason Invite
LEESBURG, Va. – Sean Helmke led five top-13 finishers for the VMI men's cross country team, as the Keydets finished second in the team standings at the George Mason Invite, contested Saturday at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia. The VMI women, led by Bethany King, finished third in the team standings.
Helmke led the way for men with a fourth-place finish, as he crossed the line in 25:20 on the course that measured just under 8,000-meters. Daniel DeNijs was eighth with a time of 25:39, and Avery Martin finished ninth in 25:41.
The Keydets finished second in the team standings thanks to their 33 points, 11 markers behind victorious, regionally-ranked George Mason. VMI easily defeated Mount St. Mary's and SUNY-Brooklyn, the other two teams at the event.
King paced the Keydet women for the fourth straight meet, completing the course that was slightly less than 6K in 23:46. Kennedy Flynn was once again VMI's #2 finisher, crossing the line 15th in 24:25.
In the team standings, the Keydets (71 points) easily defeated fourth-place Mount St. Mary's (94) and SUNY-Brooklyn (135), which finished fifth.
Rounding out VMI's finishers were Mia Castelveter (24th/25:50), Riley Neary (28th/26:54) and Christina Hill (31st/27:23).
VMI cross country will return to action Oct. 16, when the team takes part in the Wake Forest Invitational in Kernersville, North Carolina.
Catamounts compete at rainy USC Upstate Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action Saturday morning at the USC Upstate Invitational. The women finished fifth out of a field of 13, while the men took sixth in their race out of 13.
Freshman Kaitlyn Lingard once again led the Catamount women as she finished fifth overall in the field with a time of 18:45.69 over the 5K distance. Sophomore Laney Browder came across next for the Catamounts in 25th overall with a time of 19:34.77.
As a team the Catamounts finished ahead of Southern Conference members Wofford (seventh) and The Citadel (10th). Appalachian State, High Point and Florida Gulf Coast stood at the top of the podium following the event.
For the men it was freshman Liam Brooks leading the pack as he placed 14th overall with a time of 26:27.02. Fellow freshman Caleb Albrecht came in second for the Catamounts while placing 36th overall with a time of 27:57.92.
As a team the Catamounts finished ahead of Southern Conference members The Citadel (seventh) and Wofford (eighth). High Point, Appalachian State and Liberty stood at the top of the podium following the event.
The Catamounts will take one week off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 16 at the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.
Wofford competes at USC Upstate Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s cross country teams ran at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning at Milliken Park. In heavy rain and on a sloppy course, the women finished seventh overall, while the men were eighth.
The women’s 5k competition started things off and Anya Bunao was the first Terrier to cross the finish line at 20:03.76 in 37th place. Marella Angello (20:07.24) and Rebeka Fadgyas (20:30.00) were next for Wofford. Alexandra Forster and Sarah Spiro also scored for the Terriers. Also running were Jamie Barnett, Chandler Washburn, Breck Peterson, Halee Rogrs, LeAndrea Combo, Rebeka Parent, Alexandra Christopoulos, and Morgan Schweers.
The men’s 8k race followed and Ryan Doyle was the top finisher for the Terriers at 27:50.50 to place 33rd. Cisco Ferre (28:11.53), Cristian Widenhouse (28:12.27), Joe Harbevich (28:40.68) and Jonathan Rice (28:52.13) rounded out the top five scorers for Wofford. Alex Michaels, Dane Szalwinski, Ben Hensley, Ben Boatwright, Jurdan Mossburg, and William Stutts aslo ran for the Terriers.
High Point won the men’s race with 28 points. In the women’s competition, Appalachian State took first place with a total of 47 points. The meet originally had 32 teams scheduled to compete, however several did not attend due to the weather.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the College of Charleston Classic. The Southern Conference Championship will be Oct. 31 at Furman University.
